The assumption made in the question is not a correct or verified one. Smarter people can be more successful as well. Plus, success has a broad range of definition.

First of all, success as what is being presented by the materialist media (wealth, better and more life facilities, etc) is more correlated to the EQ and not the IQ. Smart people are those who have a high IQ. But a high IQ does not guarantee a high EQ.
- This is a bias, in the first place. We only see what we want to see. There are many low-IQ people who are not successful, and their average number is greater than the number of smart people, because smarts are a minority. However, people tend to see the extreme cases. So you see a couple of smart people who were not so successful, and a couple of idiots who are. Then human brain forgets about the mediocre cases, and tends to see a pattern in the extremes.
- Smart people might have a tendency to seek success in higher levels of life, such as becoming more knowledgeable, or acquiring inner peace. But idiots simply cannot understand that much. Idiots target lower goals such as a better car, a better house, etc. Then one compares a smart person with an idiot, and sees that the smart person is driving a modest car, while the idiot drives a fancy car, and thus judges that the idiot is more successful.
- Smart people usually can see more details, and the more they understand, the more they fear of moving forward. It is called ANALYSIS PARALYSIS. While idiots simply take a path, don't notice how they are harming other people by their silly goals, and just progress in their mundane goals.
- Smart people rely on their own power, because they can count on it. But idiots cheat! They find connections and do everything by pulling strings. And we all know that a cheater reaches a goal, much more easily and at a much lower cost than a genuine person does.
- Smarter people are usually hated by idiots, because the idiots see them as a threat to their false success. So idiots usually do their best to pull smart people down. So another reason is that smart people are a minority outnumbered by idiots.
