Q: How exactly do various types of experimental setups contribute to our knowledge of future ITER operation?

With the huge enginnering challenge that the construction of the experimental fusion tokamak ITER poses, smaller scale benchmark experiments were needed to test various new physics that is expected to be found during ITER operation.

Because the conditions found inside ITER are planned to be trully extreme, with temperatures peaking at ten times the temperature of the center of the Sun, such conditions are normally unachieavable in other experiments. Therefore the benchmark experiments serve more to point out various showstoppers and no-go zones for plasma operation.

But how exactly do various types of experimental setups contribute to our knowledge of future ITER operation?
