The water was dark today. Peaceful, cleaner water had never known or conceived the existence of such an ocean. It was lazy. Allowing the ocean to lap at its gentle swaying waves, playing with them like a parent would with a child. The ocean showed no signs of foreboding or problem. It was like all oceans were like it.
The river was vast and well travelled. Movement in its waters signalled the presence of nature and nature's creatures, but this day it was eerily empty. The water still mirrored the sky and the sky reflected in the water. People no longer lived in the riverbed, even though there had been signs of human activity in the river earlier on.
Author's comments:
This was the first story of mine that I have published. I had published many other ones on this site prior to this story. However, I had published no short fiction on this site for a long while.
This has been mentioned only by one person via PM on this site. However, I have no doubt that some people have seen or read it somewhere else on the Web.
When I wrote this, I felt it was the right time for me on this site. The site had experienced a great boom of activity over the years on the main page. Many stories had been published and many had fallen into disrepair.
I also wanted to prove to myself that I could write complete works despite having published only several short stories up until this point.
A few months later, I did indeed prove I could write scripts of the highest quality. 'The Singer of the Mountains' was the first of these. It was also an entry in our TCOI competition.
I hope you enjoy this story. This is the first of many great things to come on TCS. Please review here.
Cheers, Sassan
Writer's comments:
This is probably the first story that I had written that I found no pleasure in writing. It started as a simple idea. I have always been a fan of the Beatles and later on, a fan of Arthur C. Clarke, namely 2001: a Space Odyssey. One of the things I have always felt is a measure of a civilization's development is that of its art. I have decided to use my two deeply held loves as the main driving forces for this story.
In late 2010, I stumbled upon some lyrics from a song by Sonata Arctica. I have always been a huge fan of the song 'The Flame of Freedom.' It was playing on a CD I had found amongst the thousands I had at the time. After reading the lyrics, I found a brilliant story idea.
With a little imagination and a lot of luck, a story idea has a funny way of becoming a story. However, the great satisfaction in writing a story is not in its conception. It is in the execution of it.
I could not finish writing this for a very long time. I completed it late in 2011, but kept it unpublished until early 2012, when I started working on The Singer of the Mountains.
After finishing this story, I decided to not post the script on this site until I was sure it was complete. I hope you enjoy this story.
