While out on a walk this morning I went past my school and was more or less shocked to see the destruction its been through.
This high school I speak of, is more than 50 years old and held a high regard in the city if not the state, having played an instrumental role in the upbringing of some of the most influential people over the time of its existence.
Its gradual decline may well have started in the school’s leniency to focus on education and accept students from poor background, helping the guardians and parents with a payment structure that suits their financial background - a practice that the school followed from its early days till the changing times where captilalism finally caught up on education in my little city, and schools, new and old, emerged, ambitious to compete.
My school could not adapt to this change and held true to its founding principles only to see a gradual drop in admissions and revenue. This lack of income, led the school and its employees working through a cost cutting model, with some of the employees often being left with unpaid salaries for months.
Fast forward to today, a few years after the troubles started, the school was leased to a firm that calls itself an educational firm. One of the first actions they took is to cut through the very heart of this school - the entire high school block was destroyed within the campus. The fence beside the campus removed entirely. An old open air auditorium that stood majestically in the campus blown to bits with no sign of it.
Prior to this lease, the school had a run in with a local politician who aggressively planned to buy out the entire property.
This is why a 3rd world country is never fit to understand any legacy or can it work to sustain any legacy, unless for its own ulterior motives.
