Svalbard

They say there is a certain madness that seeps into the minds of those who are lost in cold and uninhabitable places. To be lost in the harsh climate of a polar region is to have your wits challenged daily. Every passing day closes the chances of an escape, an opportunity, and a rescue. The human mind will be challenged in ways far beyond anything that is previously imagined. A series of events that will push people to explore new boundaries, and to contemplate the cold, dreary, and stark reality of this world.

A cross the frozen tundra of Svalbard, at a latitude of up to 78 degrees north, the human mind will be challenged daily.

“Thick snows, huge snow banks, foamy waterfalls, a rocky beach bordering the frozen ocean, and plain harsh tundra.” Those were the things that I had to face upon entering the land of hugeness and polar ice caps. That was my first impression of Svalbard.

Those frigid tundras wasn’t what I had in mind when I first decided to go to this remote place in the arctic. To be honest, it was not in my mind at all. I was not there to visit a remote place. I never saw myself doing so at all. I never had the luxury of having such thoughts. And it was not until I received a spur of actions.

Nobody can predict the future. So, nobody can predict the consequences of their actions. Little did I realize how things would be going.

One thing I can say about Svalbard, is that the sun never sets. What a joy to have such a beautiful view without the constraint of darkness. The weather is unforgiving to the human body.

It is a typical stormy half-day of rain in the early morning. Nothing spectacular. It is followed by a sunny half-day that is followed by a frosty half-day. There are no clear days.

True to its name, it is in fact frigid.

“The sun never sets. What a joy to have such a beautiful view without the constraint of darkness.”

The weather all over the earth is made up of clouds, wind, rain, snow, hail, and many more. However, there is the one thing that can be counted on in order to describe the weather. It is the sunshine. So, it would be superficial and foolhardy to say that the weather is sunny when there are clouds in the sky. The sun does not shine on the clouds. So, if the weather is sunny, then the sun is shining on it.

Just get up to the front door, a crisp wind hits me. A loud whistling sound can be heard. It is forecasting the coming of a storm. I wonder if anybody can tell that it is going to be a rainy day.

I got up early in the morning to just catch the opening of the airport. I saw, in front of me, the still frozen deadly waters of the fjord.

As I went out and walked towards the terminal, I saw storms in the horizon. I just felt the sun, the wind, and the coldness of the air. I don’t know what happened to me, but I just went out and walked around. I didn’t have my body warmed up.
