In my last series, I have written about the downside of what most occupations, mainly engineer would face throughout his/her tenure with a company. On the bright side, there are specific areas whereby an engineer would enjoy the fruit of their hard work.
Here comes the good part where every engineer would have the advantage over others.
You are the specialist in your field
As an engineer in a particular area, you are the specialist in that subject, and there is no one other than you who understands better the dos and don’ts in any task. Hence, people working with you will respect you more as your advice is vital to the development of a project.
Respect comes from you helping others to solve their problems regularly which builds up credibility over time. I was once a newbie and client would not take me seriously until I can establish rapport with them.
Take your time to understand your client and solve their problem. You do not have to rush things as it will definitely won’t happen overnight.
Your success is determined by the accumulated little things you accomplished for others.
The future opens up more opportunity for engineers
In comparison with another profession, an engineer has a better choice of career progression. An engineer is not bound to one subject, and he/she can choose to pursue sales, business development, management, consultation instead.
Because an engineer would deal with almost everything in a project, the skills we gained over time help us adapt to any environment should we choose to change our career path.
You can make sales anytime, but a salesperson can barely keep up with the technicality of a project.
You will have better technical knowledge and diplomacy skills than others

As your career progress over the time, you will obtain more knowledge on the product you are working. Your technical skills will improve, and calculations will be of second nature to you.
On top of that, dealing with different clients help mold your personality into a better person. Throughout your career, you will learn to have the patience and diplomatic skills to handle different cases to get the job done and being paid accordingly. This would be an intangible asset only you could wield that no one can.
P/S: Having good technical background could save you from deceptions others would try against you.
The World needs you
Sounds overrated right? Truth to be told, the world still needs your help in fixing things, getting the job done correctly. It is a huge market out there, and you are not limited to be an engineer only. There is so much knowledge that you could share with the world given that the development of the internet has matured.
In short, you will not go hungry. Unless if you are too lazy to get up and work.
There you go, these are some of the factors that I think an engineer would fair better than other occupations. Although career does change over time, the adaptation process would be different. An engineer would have the upper hand in being flexible towards diversities.
