RE: Flight to Freedom

I can only imagine! K-mart was probably past its shelf-life around the late-90's. They were the go-to store for us in the 1970's and 80's. Nice! We used to love flying kites. I don't see many kids doing it anymore. The triangular shaped kites were just coming out in the late 70's and they flew so much better, before that it was the traditional diamond shaped kite.

Our K-Mart was definitely the place to be. We also had a Woolworth's downtown with the lunch counter and that was a pretty cool place as well. Then we had a store called 3D for a short time. It was basically like a K-Mart. I remember I bought my first CD player there. We have a park over in Tawas that is out on a peninsula and they have a kite shop there because the winds are so good coming off Lake Huron.

That brings back memories! We had a Woolworth's in downtown Columbus on High Street and there was also one outside of the office building I worked in in St. Paul. The lake breezes would be perfect for kite flying!

Did your Woolworth's have the lunch counter? I remember you used to be able to get cherry coke there. Like real cherry coke where they muddled the cherries and stuff.

Yes, both of them had the lunch counter. I remember they sold fried bologna sandwiches. Their burgers and fries were decent. There were always old-timers sitting at the counter at the one by Lazarus in downtown Columbus. We had a lot of characters in downtown Columbus in the 70's and 80's. The Coke sounds great! I never had a chance to try that.
