Yes, it blinds people and also I think when people are so firmly entrenched in an idea they're hesitant to admit they were wrong when presented with evidence that proves it. I'm sure there have been many Tesla owners pulled over by the police and given tickets. As the law stands now the driver is still responsible for what their car does.
