That's the part that intrigued me so much about this. According to the story technology had been, largely, destroyed in 2036 and they needed something more basic to work with the the infrastructure that was left, hence the IBM 5100. It seems like the perpetrators of the hoax had an intimate knowledge of the 5100's "secret" capabilities and built the entire story around that.
