RE: A Sample From The Muse

in #story • 3 days ago (edited)

Hey Eric,
Read your story and it's reminiscent of something I might write which begs the question, what exactly is creativity and why is it lost as people age? Can you think of various artists and musicians who were prolific in their youth and now are silent or scarcely productive anything at all? Have you ever experienced a sustained writer's block? BTW, I haven't but I'm not sure why and I don't know if the fanciful tales of romancing the Muse are just metaphors for an existential malaise. Why are people more creative in their youth and why does inspiration dry up? I honestly don't know and you know what, I don't care to know. For me to live is to create - we breathe out and in, not just in. Maybe I'm simple but I just don't get it. how do you see this--do yoou anticipate slowing down or God forbid, stopping one day? I'd like too know your mind in this matter. Oh, and I liked the story :)

Hi John, That's a difficult question to answer. I imagine the fizzling out of creativity has a lot of different causes. Sometimes people are the victims of their own success, I think. They feel pressure to top the last project, they overthink, their egos or emotions get in the way, they begin to take the Muse for granted. Sometimes they lose the hunger. For me, creativity is more like a channel that I have to sit down and get in tune with. I wake up with so many of my best ideas, or they'll hit me like a lightning bolt while I'm outside walking. They definitely don't feel like my brain is consciously coming up with them. If I'm depressed, distracted, or distraught the ideas just don't come. In terms of stopping or slowing down—I've tried a few times and it just doesn't work for me. I end up feeling depressed or as if I'm not living life to its full potential if I stop creating too long. It's been a real challenge for me here as my engagement has dwindled over the past couple of years. So many of the people I began with here have left and the platform's tastes seem to have shifted. Long story short, I'll keep writing as long as I can. I may decide to shift my blog to my website at some point but for now it'll continue to live here on Hive. Thanks!
