Simplicity - A short story

in #story3 years ago

He looked at the flower for a long time. It was really beautiful to look at and had a nice subtle kind of smell. One could smell it only by taking it near the nose, not otherwise.

It would be a crime to pluck it and give it to his lover, he thought. She would just place it inside her purse or even worse forget it on the coffee table in the cafe where they were going to meet.

Would she treasure it and be glad that he plucked the rose for her? Even if she feigned a smile, she would not take in the shock of the news he was about to give her anyway.

She was smart, rather over smart. She had never thought that he would catch her cheating on him. She wanted money and fame and for that, she would go to any lengths to get it. Money meant everything to her. She had agreed to come for a coffee when he said that he was going to give her a surprise. She had probably imagined getting a costly gift like a gold earring which she had often demanded.

He had been a fool. He had ignored the girl next door who used to smile at him, shyly and often helped his mother. His mother had hinted about her but he had ignored it because he was bewitched by her whom he was now going to kick out from his life forever.

He dressed smartly and went to the house next door and asked the girl who was surprised to see him. He told her to come to the cafe in about half an hour. He said he would wait for her. He hoped she wouldn't mind his sudden approach but she was happy and agreed. He regretted that he had ignored her before. He gave her the red rose that he plucked and gave it to her. She smiled shyly.

He went to the cafe and there she was. She was wearing a beautiful dress which he knew her clandestine lover had given her. He sat opposite her and told her straight away that he was breaking up with her as he knew she was cheating on him. She became angry. He asked her to return his gifts and leave him for good.

She got up in a hurry and walked out hoping she could catch another 'fool' who would be enraptured by her looks.

The next-door girl came in a short while and they both spoke at length and he realized what a fool he had been to ignore her.

Life often makes things simple but humans make it complicated, he thought.

This was a really beautiful piece of writing. A poignant story, but with many a truth within. Interesting what you said in closing about humans complicating things... I said those exact words to @creativemary just a few minutes ago on her post about marriage.

Lovely post - and thanks to @jerrytsuseer for the reblog, which was how I spotted this.
