Then the Good Lord said to the two girls:

“Give me your mother’s arms."

In an instant, both arms were attached to the body.

“Belle Madeleine, you will leave immediately with your two daughters. All night you will walk, without eating or drinking, without ever resting. At sunrise, you will arrive in a large city. There, you will rent a cottage, and you will work there to earn your poor living."

"Good Lord, you will be obeyed."

The Good Lord left with Saint John and Saint Peter.

The next day, at sunrise, Belle Madeleine and her two daughters arrived in the big city. There, they rented a cottage and worked there to earn their poor living. Early in the morning, all three took their distaffs and spun flax together until bedtime.

At this job, the two girls ended up, one evening, scratching their fingers with their spindles.

“Poor children,” said Belle Madeleine, “come and let me take care of you.” —And now go to sleep. Until the Good Lord heals you, I will spin flax night and day, to earn our poor living."

The two girls obeyed, and Belle Madeleine began spinning flax again.

While all this was happening, the marquess had been traveling the world for seven years, mounted on his big black horse. Everywhere he asked for news of Belle Madeleine and her two daughters. But no one was able to answer him.

One evening, after midnight, the poor man arrived in a big city. The rain was falling in torrents.

The marquis dismounted and took shelter, with his large black horse, under the awning of a small house.

It was the cottage where his two daughters slept, while his wife, Belle Madeleine, spun flax to earn their poor living. The light shone through the cracks in the door, and the Marquis listened, while the rain still fell in torrents.

The flax said to Belle Madeleine:

“Belle Madeleine, is there a sadder fate than mine? They throw me into the ground. They're tearing me away. They decapitate me. They're drowning me. They hit me with heavy blows with a mallet. They put me to roast in the bright sun. My bones are being broken. I'm being put through an iron comb. They're tailing me. They put me on canvas. I'm being twisted. They beat me. Belle Madeleine, is there a sadder fate than mine?"

“Shut up, flax,” replied Belle Madeleine. "My fate is even sadder than yours. Flax, there was a time when I lived as a marchioness, in a beautiful castle, with the one I loved. He was a man as handsome as day, honest as gold, strong and bold as Samson. Unfortunately, he married me without his mother's consent. The Good Lord has punished us. However, his mother had always remained mistress at the castle. I was her first servant. Lin, my husband left one day for the war; but he did not come back. For seven years I waited for him. Then his mother had both of my arms sawn off and chased me out of the castle. With my two poor daughters, we left by the grace of God. But God is good. He gave me both my arms back. Flax, the three of us are following you here. But, this evening, my daughters both injured their fingers with their spindles. That's why I sent them to sleep. That's why I'm going alone, and will go night and day, to earn our poor living. Flax, you see, my fate is sadder than yours."

With a strong kick, the marquis broke down the door.

" My wife! My poor wife! My daughters! My poor girls!"

The four of them spent the rest of the night kissing.

Seven weeks later, they were back in their castle.

“Mother,” said the marquis, “you lied to me. Through you, my brave wife and my two poor daughters suffered fourteen years of death and passion. Retire to a convent. The Good Lord will forgive you your sin."

Then, Belle Madeleine and her two daughters began to scream and cry.

"No no. We don't want your mother to retire to a convent. We intend that she will always be mistress in the castle. We intend to be her first servants."

Then the marchioness repented. She asked forgiveness from her son, from Belle Madeleine, from their two daughters, and they lived happily for a long time.

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.

I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.

In this tale, the good people who have suffered for many years are finally happy again.

And, interestingly enough, they don't want to take revenge against the wicked mother-in-law, who repented of her evil behavior.

I was too tired yesterday to make a late post when we arrived in Calgary.

We left Kati's mother's house at 5:20 in the morning, before sunrise, in a shuttle that took us to Budapest International Airport. We were the only passengers in the shuttle.

In this picture taken from inside the shuttle minibus, the sun has just risen.

And in this one, we see the shadow of the minibus that travels at the same speed.

The flight to Frankfurt arrived on time. But we had to walk for more than 45 minutes to our next flight. It seems that we arrived at one end of Frankfurt airport and had to walk to the other end! We decided right then to never again fly through Frankfurt.

At the Calgary airport, we were greeted by Peter, Timi, and their two children.

We finally arrived at their house around 6 PM, after a trip of more than 20 hours. As we are saying regularly: We are too old for this shit!.

Two hours later, I was in bed sleeping.

As we have heard, this story shows that this mother-in-law is very cruel and cruel to her daughter-in-law and children and now she is thinking of cutting off their arms. And then she says that you have to go and earn money as a poor person, so it is not right to do such things. One day when their father returns, he will show all these things to his mother. He will not be able to forgive and in the same way, the relationships that happen are damaged. Things seem to be going on in the same way inside, so we all need to spend quality time with each other.

Just like when a person has to travel for 20 hours then a person gets very tired and when he reaches the place above his destination then it is very important to sleep to recharge the person again and if the age is more. If it does, these things become even more difficult.

It is very good to see that you are enjoying your life even at this age.

I don't understand why the marchioness will cut off her daughter in-law arms and send her packing, is it to make her useless or what? That's pure wickedness, in fact, her wickedness know no limit. Well! Thank God for the good Lord who helped Belle and gave her back her arms.

One thing I love again about this tale is that the marquis left in search of his wife and two daughters without telling his mother because if peradventure his mother knew she would have found another evil way to stop him. I am glad he finally found them and they all came back home. The marchioness is so lucky to have such a good wife as Belle because even after all the dirty act she did to them, Belle still pleaded for her not to be punished. The lesson here is very important and it is one among the things thought in the bible. "Forgiveness" it is important that we learn how to forgive one another no matter what they have done. it is easier said than done though.

Oh no! The trip was more than 20 hours? That was quite a stressful journey but thank God you and Kati arrived safely. I was expecting that your post will come in a bit late like you said the other day but when I did not see it, I knew the journey might have stressed you and you needed to rest. Thank God for journey mercies.

In almost every story, journey starts with good hope and strong vision as it seems to be great and everything seems to be awesome. But, twist comes at the mid of the story. Like the Marchioness cutting the arms of her daughter in law. It's soo sad that mother in law is cutting the hands of her daughter in law. It seems she was a witch and have no mercy on mankind.

Furthermore, the best part was that Marquees had very kind heart. She didn't took revenge. The story came to an end as usual with "Happy Ending" and all people lived together as a united family.

In addition, with the passage of time as the man gets older. Long journey makes you tired very much. Although the transportation and speed was good and that saved your extra time. 20 hours of journey at older age. Man, you need a grand salute for it. I hope you take a good rest and cone back to your routinelife being full active and healthy.

The Marquess was finally reunited with his family after 14 long years of absence. Belle Madeleine was a chaste woman who remained faithful to her husband even though he was not there and didn't go to other men. The Marquess himself also stayed true to his wife all those years and this shows that there was true love between them. What a joy it would have been for the Marquess and his family to see each other again after 14 solid years! No wonder they spent the entire night kissing. It's also a good thing that Belle Madeleine and her two daughters pleaded for the forgiveness of the cruel-hearted Marchioness. That shows how kind-natured they are. It reminds me of The Good Lord on the cross praying for those who crucified him and saying, 'Father forgive them...' Even though the Marchioness deserved punishment I would say it wouldn't be necessary if her repentance was sincere.

Thanks for this interesting tale.

It's evident you and your loved ones were worn out by yesterday's journey, no wonder you missed yesterday's post. But the most important thing is that you journeyed safely to your destination. The journey itself seems like an interesting journey from the pictures you took.

Goodbye and God bless you and your family, @vcelier.

This story actually ended well, I really like the way it ended. The Marchioness is a very wicked woman, she made Belle Madeleine and her two daughters suffer so much. But at last, I was happy to hear that the Marquess later found his wife and his two daughters, and they all went back to their castle.
Even for the fact that the Marchioness made Belle Madeleine and her two daughters suffer for fourteen years. When the Marquess was angry with what his mother did to his wife and his two daughters and wanted to send her to the convent, Belle and her two daughters cried and pleaded with the Marquess, that they wouldn't want the Marchioness to retire to a convent. And that was how the Marquess forgave his mother and they were one happy family again.
This story teaches us to always forgive those who offend us,no matter what they did to us.

I thank God you guys arrived safely. It was indeed a stressful journey.

Here the story ends. I'm happy that ending is beautiful. Yeah you are right the persons who do good to others must have good with their own one day. It's a great that she forgive her mother in law but I want that she also have to suffer from something bad so she could realized the pain she gave to others. But it's alright I'm glad that he trust his wife and live happily.

Wow hope you reached safely. Take some rest and lot of care

Sad the story of Belle Madeleine, but in spite of how her mother-in-law mistreated her and all that she lived outside her home, she did not want her to be sent to a convent, that showed the good heart of Belle Madeleine and her daughters, on the other hand, the man did not lose hope of finding his Belle Madeleine.

These tales or stories suddenly have a twist and their end is very fast to arrive.

Well, I hope you have rested, in the photo with the kids and the suitcase I could see your tiredness. Now when will be the next adventure of a new trip.

That was a great busy day for you. After such a long travelling, have a rest.
If we talk about the story, I was thinking that how brave she was. She has passed all the troubles created by her mother in law.
She was very cruel and I think if mothers married their son, they have to accept them with open heart.
She was telling all troubles through which she is passing and very sad moment was that her daughters cut their fingers in spindles.
How innocent they were.
Her husband was witness now as he was listening his wife and he forgive his mother, that was quite nice decision.
She was his mother and punished her is very difficult to him that's why he forgive her.

My heart goes out to Belle Madeleine for all that she had to go through. Fourteen years is not a joke at all but thanks to the Good Lord, Saint Peter and Saint John for giving her arms back to her. Even the twins spun linen until they sustained injury. The Marquess searched for his family for seven whole years. Everyone suffered so much because of the Marchioness' wicked heart.
Belle Madeleine is really a super human for that act of forgiveness to someone who hated her for no just reason and caused her pain.
Welcome back home Sir @vcelier and I'm glad you had a safe trip even if not as expected.

It's so unfortunate that things went the way they did, needless sufferings inflicted on poor innocent souls for no sin committed. The Marquess suffered also, so so much, for the mother's wickedness.
Well, I'm happy that the story has a happy ending, with all of them living as one big family.
The journey has been so stressful considering the age. Well thank God you arrived safely and you are well rested. My regards to Katie.

What a wonderful ending for these good people!
After so much suffering, it is a relief to see them regain their happiness.
It is truly amazing to see that they do not wish to take revenge on their wicked mother-in-law, but have found the compassion in their hearts to forgive her.
This story teaches us the power of forgiveness and how it can transform our lives in a positive way.
How inspiring!

I love this kid if reunion even though I am not really cool with it. It is somewhat annoying. There is no doubt that the marchioness was the one who sent her son’s wife and daughter packing. She didn’t just do that but even cute the arms of her son’s wife. Well, it is enough reason to runaway but I’m very happy that the marchioness came around in search of them.

He found them and they all lived together in happiness. It is cool but if I were the one, I may not allow, lol. Anyone who can cut down your arms can actually try to kill you so I have to be wary. Nice story!

It must have really been a choky walk all through the day and night with her two daughters not stopping, resting or even sleeping. It can really be dangerous. Well I am happy the good Lord was actually obeyed irrespective of what may happen because that save and help the life of the daughter. I was wondering why do the good lord actually took so long in healing those poor girl Because they didn't warrant to be suffering that much.
