St Francis's monastery in Italy, sitting on sheer rock and boulders

in #sundayboulders4 years ago (edited)

Memories come flooding back so quickly like it was yesterday. I so recall my amazement at actually looking at the massive undertaken by the monks and their helpers to build a monastery way back in the 13th century. The place is St Francis's monastery situated a couple of hours outside Florence.

Just the building of this wall would have taken a lot of manpower and determination. I guess it was only with the help of donkeys, carts and muscles.

The area of the monastery that astounded all my walking compassions was the formidable rocky base of the monastery. This was where St Francis slept, in a little cave tucked away inside huge boulders covered wth moss. We wondered how cold it would have been let alone how uncomfortable and hard to sleep on.

Our first night was in the monastery, a fitting and most memorable start for our long walk to the historic town of Assisi. Never to be forgotten.

The next morning we walked down the very rocky paved driveway set between the moss covered boulders and stone walls.

It has been a wonderful walk down memory lane, I loved everything about this mountainous walk. It was a tough one but I did it.

Thank you @shasta for hosting @bouldersunday.

Cheers and Blessings

How wonderful to walk on the grounds of the monastery. The stone wall is massive.

There is a Little St. Francis of Assisi Shrine outside my old hometown which I visited regularly when it opens to the public once a year in August. Awhile ago I wrote a story about this Shrine of the Saint of the environment and animals. Seeing your post of this reminds me to find it and revamp for a post.

Hello Jo, I look forward to reading your post. St Francis is very special. We walked his Way in Italy and what astounded us was that he did not wear sandals. Fancy going barefoot. It was a really tough walk.

I can’t image the life he lived in such poverty.

I did the post and put a link to yours on there.

I shall check it out, thank you. St Francis of Assisi is a favourite of mine too.

Looks like not a easy terrain to move around on a daily basis.

Hi @ace108, we walked up and down hills and mountains everyday. Got very fit!

I heard news about a place in Japan where the people live long and their homes requires them to walk slopes everyday too. So, good for you.

Everyday of your life, now that is a big wow @ace108. I am so impressed. Just shows that exercise is so good for you.

Wow what a fantastic place and awesome memories @angiemitchell!
It sure looks like it was easy for the ancients to build such structures
that last so long! Gorgeous boulders, especially the rock between
two hard spots! So lovely looking with all the moss!
I'm curious if the sun shines in the cave on a special day! :-)

That is a really thought @shasta, it all seemed so cold and dark when we were in the cave. But it was raining and a very cold day. I remembering thinking how etheric it all was.

Wonderful photos angiemtichell and what an amazing time that had to have been!

Very memorable janton. Photos are great for musing. I don't know if I could do it right now unless Ben and I do some training, lol.

Well, once in a lifetime is probably enough. You guys can concentrate on other types of challenges. Like keeping up with the grandkids! lol.

Yes, boy oh boy we sure do sleep well the night after babysitting. I don't sleep so well the night before because we have a 5am alarm to leave at 6am. It is worth it and we only do this wonderful job every second week.

Those kids are so lucky to have you guys!
