UNAUTHORISED MISSIVE

They say that, “power corrupts, and that absolute power corrupts absolutely.” But I’m not so sure. Power is defined as, “the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behaviour of others or the course of events.” Authority on the other hand is, “the right to give orders, make decisions, and enforce obedience.” It is, “the right to rule.” No matter how much power we might have at our disposal, would we exercise it if we did not think we had the right, if we thought we were undeserving or we were humble? Ah, but give us authority! What wont we do if believe we have the right? I cannot think of a single thing. Authority in the name of God, the Greater Good or patriotism; because we consider ourselves better, intellectually or morally superior; because we have been authorised by the State. Authority corrupts and corrupts absolutely. Authority rationalises , justifies and fosters creeping, festering egoism, narcissism, pride and feelings of superiority. Authority is the self-serving shield that both protects and enables us. Authority creates hierarchies of masters and servants and demands unquestioning obedience. Is there anything more evil and corrupting of personal growth and the human spirit than the right to treat others as lesser?
