Alcanzar la fama, estar en bocas de todos, ser amado de forma incógnita por la mayoría, son deseos que animan a más de uno.
En nuestros días el afán de salir del anonimato, de alcanzar aquellos famosos “quince minutos de fama”, de los que hablaba Andy Warhol, hace que las personas traspasen todos los límites, incluyendo los de su propia cordura.
El director italiano Matteo Garrone, nos presenta en este film "Reality", uno de esos casos en los que la búsqueda de la fama se convierte en la única razón de vida.
Luciano es un hombre común que vive en un sector pobre de Nápoles, con una familia bastante grande, integrada por su madre, la esposa, los hijos, las sobrinas y un primo. Se gana la vida vendiendo pescados cerca de su vecindario, y haciendo de vez en cuando negocios turbios con electrodomésticos que les consigue su esposa. Tiene un don natural para la actuación, es el alma de las fiestas, capaz de hacer reír a todos. Es muy conocido, amigo de muchos, en fin… un buen tipo.
Cierto día su familia se entera que en el centro comercial donde se encuentran de paseo están haciendo audiciones para el “Grande Fratello”, la franquicia italiana del famoso reality show "El Gran Hermano", un show que garantiza riqueza y fama. Y deciden llamar a Luciano para que se presente a la audición.
Al principio Luciano no muestra interés, pero todos le hablan de lo bien que se le da la actuación. La insistencia familiar es capaz de convencerlo. En el último momento, cuando ya los productores del programa están recogiendo los equipos, se presenta a la audición, y es preseleccionado para otra audición a celebrarse en Roma. Nada menos y nada más que en los famosos estudios Cinecitta, cuna de grandes filmes que forman parte de la historia del séptimo arte, y que ahora por la presión económica han devenido a estudios de TV.
Desde el momento de la preselección Luciano empieza a fantasear sobre cómo será su vida futura una vez que lo seleccionen para estar en la “casa”, compartiendo con los otros competidores. Luego de la audición en Roma queda completamente convencido de que ha sido un exitazo, según él es inminente que lo escogerán. Ya se siente estrella de TV.
Una larga espera comienza para toda la familia. Por ningún lado llega el aviso donde confirmen que sí ha sido aceptado. Luciano se va desesperando, su familia no deja de alimentarle la ilusión, le dicen que tenga calma; la única voz con los pies en la realidad es la de su esposa, María, quien le insiste que se olvide del programa, que nunca lo van a llamar. Pero Luciano da rienda suelta a su fantasía, comienza a pensar que la gente del show lo está vigilando, a ver si comete algún error que lo descalifique.
Decide entonces cambiar su vida y comienza a aparentar lo que no es. Vende la pescadería para remozar su desvencijada casa, deja el negocio turbio con los electrodomésticos, regala el mobiliario familiar, se olvida de todos y se instala a ver la transmisión del programa mañana, tarde y noche. Paso a paso va perdiendo toda relación con la realidad y se entrega por completo a su imaginario mundo como personaje de TV…
Son muchas las películas que tratan sobre el efecto y la influencia de los medios; entre las que recuerdo está Wag The Dog (1997), con Dustin Hoffman y Robert De Niro, en la que se inventa una guerra para ser promocionada en la TV, y el Show de Truman (1998), en la que Jim Carrey vive en un estudio gigante.
En esta oportunidad el director Garrone echa mano a la comedia, un género muy trabajado en el cine italiano, para contarnos la tragedia vivida por Luciano.
La película tiene varias capas de interpretación, por un lado está la denuncia social. Desde las primeras escenas el director nos muestra el contraste de una ciudad abigarrada donde coexisten la opulencia y la pobreza.
Centra su atención el Director en el efecto que los medios tienen sobre la gente común, en los más pobres. No es él unico abordaje posible, porque todos somos permeables a la influencia mediática. ¿Quizá los más vulnerables lo son más? Habría que preguntarle a Garrone.
Otro punto que destaca la película es la importancia de la familia en la vida de las personas; volvemos a ver aquí esas grandes familias italianas que han sido presentadas por el cine en muchas ocasiones.
La familia induce a Luciano, lo entusiasma, le alimenta la ilusión, y luego, cuando llega el momento del desquicio, hace todo lo posible por rescatarlo del foso. Es meritorio que en estos tiempos de tanto individualismo y soledad todavía se presenten en el cine familias como las de toda la vida.
El tema principal, si es que se pudiera hablar de uno solo, es el proceso de enajenación que vive Luciano. ¿Una víctima de la manipulación mediática? Ese es una de las observaciones que han hecho algunos críticos. Ven en la película de Garrone un análisis simplón sobre la relación de los medios con la sociedad. Yo no me atrevo a tanto, pienso que la película cumple su cometido.
A mí esta película me dejó un buen sabor. Tiene muchos puntos favorables. Una narración coherente, sin vacíos que desorienten, capaz de centrar la atención en la trama. Ideas ingeniosas e inteligentes como poner a personas en los sitios exactos para alimentar la paranoia de Luciano. Una paleta de colores capaz de estimular asociaciones emocionales: brillantes en la opulencia, lúgubres en los sectores pobres, cálidos en la persona de Luciano. Una banda sonora que consigue con orquestaciones minimalistas crear la atmósfera de suspenso adecuada. Además de un excelente manejo de cámara donde predomina la cámara al hombro y algunas tomas aéreas que funcionan muy bien para crear contextos de poder y soledad.
Sí me resultó un poco cansón el uso de la cámara al hombro, un recurso que sin duda le da más naturalidad a las escenas y produce más empatía con el protagonista, pero ese movimiento permanente puede resultar agobiante.
Destacó también las actuaciones, sobre todo la de Luciano (Aniello Arena), muy expresivo, convincente, hace partícipe al espectador de la ansiedad y la confusión que está viviendo. Los integrantes de la familia también son actores que logran transmitir la naturalidad necesaria como para sentir que se trata de una familia verdadera, común, normal.
Mientras buscaba información en internet para completar la reseña encontré un dato que me llamó mucho la atención. El actor, Aniello Arena, es un convicto condenado a cadena perpetua. Cumple su prisión en Volterra, una cárcel de máxima seguridad. Allí forma parte de un grupo de teatro llamado “La Fortezza”.
El director Garrone se fijó en él cuando buscaba actores para su anterior película, Gomorra, sobre la mafia, Palma de Oro 2008. Pero en esa oportunidad no logró los permisos necesarios para sacar a Aniello de la cárcel.
No dejo de pensar en la calidad actoral de este hombre para poder actuar con tanta solvencia rodeado de sus custodios.
Otros actores con protagonismo son: Loredana Simioli como Maria. Ciro Petrone como el encargado del café. Nunzia Schiano como la tía Nunzia. Nando Paone como el primo Michele.
La película ha tenido críticas encontradas, como suele suceder. Sin embargo, consiguió el Gran Premio Del Jurado 2012, el segundo más importante en el festival de Cannes.
Esta serie de reseñas lleva el título de “Segundo visionado” porque son películas que vi en algún momento y que conservo en mi videoteca particular. Es probable que algunas de ellas no puedan encontrarse fácilmente en los sitios de streaming, pero seguro que siguen por allí en los amplios caminos de la Web.

At the last moment, when the show's producers are already packing up the equipment, he shows up for the audition and is shortlisted for another audition to be held in Rome. Nothing less and nothing more than in the famous Cinecitta studios, cradle of great films that are part of the history of the seventh art, and that now, due to economic pressure, have become TV studios.
From the moment of the pre-selection Luciano begins to fantasize about what his future life will be like once he is selected to be in the "house", sharing it with the other competitors. After the audition in Rome he is completely convinced that it has been a success, according to him it is imminent that he will be chosen. He already feels like a TV star.
A long wait begins for the whole family. The notice confirming that he has been accepted is nowhere to be found. Luciano gets desperate, his family does not stop feeding him the illusion, they tell him to be calm; the only voice with his feet in reality is that of his wife, Maria, who insists him to forget about the program, that they will never call him. But Luciano gives free rein to his fantasy, he begins to think that the people of the show are watching him, to see if he makes a mistake that will disqualify him.
He decides to change his life and begins to pretend to be something he is not. He sells the fish market to renovate his rickety house, leaves the shady business with the appliances, gives away the family furniture, forgets about everyone and settles down to watch the show morning, noon and night. Step by step he loses all connection with reality and surrenders himself completely to his imaginary world as a TV character...

The director focuses his attention on the effect that the media have on the common people, on the poorest. It is not the only possible approach, because we are all permeable to media influence. Perhaps the most vulnerable are more so? You would have to ask Garrone.
Another point that the film emphasizes is the importance of the family in people's lives; we see here again those great Italian families that have been presented by the cinema on many occasions.
The family induces Luciano, enthuses him, feeds his illusion, and then, when the moment of derangement comes, does everything possible to rescue him from the pit. It is commendable that in these times of so much individualism and loneliness, lifelong families are still presented in the cinema.
The main theme, if there is only one, is the process of alienation that Luciano goes through. A victim of media manipulation? That is one of the observations made by some critics. They see in Garrone's film a simplistic analysis of the relationship between the media and society. I don't dare to go that far; I think the film does its job.
To me, this film left me with a good taste. It has many favorable points. A coherent narration, without disorienting gaps, able to focus attention on the plot. Ingenious and intelligent ideas such as putting people in the right places to feed Luciano's paranoia. A color palette capable of stimulating emotional associations: bright in the opulence, gloomy in the poor areas, warm in the person of Luciano. A soundtrack that manages with minimalist orchestrations to create the right atmosphere of suspense. In addition to an excellent camera handling where the shoulder camera predominates and some aerial shots that work very well to create contexts of power and loneliness.
I did find the use of the shoulder camera a bit tiring, a resource that undoubtedly gives more naturalness to the scenes and produces more empathy with the protagonist, but that permanent movement can be overwhelming.
The performances also stand out, especially that of Luciano (Aniello Arena), very expressive, convincing, making the viewer a participant in the anxiety and confusion he is experiencing. The members of the family are also actors who manage to convey the naturalness necessary to feel that this is a real, ordinary, normal family.
While I was looking for information on the internet to complete the review I found a fact that caught my attention. The actor, Aniello Arena, is a convict sentenced to life imprisonment. He is serving his prison term in Volterra, a maximum security prison. There he is part of a theater group called "La Fortezza".
Director Garrone noticed him when he was looking for actors for his previous film, Gomorrah, about the mafia, Palme d'Or 2008. But on that occasion he did not get the necessary permissions to get Aniello out of jail.
I can't stop thinking about the acting quality of this man to be able to act with such solvency surrounded by his custodians.

Excelente película y tu reseña recoge la situación "angustiosa" en que nos meten los personajes. Las películas que versan sobre los medios y su incidencia en el mundo real de las personas siempre parecen exageradas, sin embargo, es innegable que los medios crean matrices de opinión y patrones de conductas.
Resaltar el rol de la familia hace que todo sea tan creíble y ese dato del actor Aniello Arena, es impresionante, estar sentenciado a cadena perpetua y tener permiso para filmar debe ser algo único en el mundo, una historia digna de ser narrada fílmicamente. Saludos.😊
