First of all; I must say that this is not a comparison to assert which series is better, it is simply an opinion from my perspective, recognizing the similarity of both works and their very similar content with a plot that grabs you. If you have seen both series, you will know what I am referring to below.
A while back, I did a review of Alice in Borderland, which I will leave at your ease at this link. In order not to make this post so long, I will leave only a synopsis of The Squid Game, since I had never done it before. Now, without further ado, let's begin.

Primeramente; debo decir que esto no es una comparación para aseverar que serie es mejor, simplemente es una opinión desde mi perspectiva, reconociendo la similitud de ambas obras y de su contenido tan parecido con una trama que te atrapa. Si te has visto las dos series, sabrás a lo que me refiero a continuación.
Hace un tiempo, hice una reseña sobre Alice in Borderland, la cual dejaré a facilidad de ustedes en este enlace. Para no hacer tan extensa esta publicación, dejaré solo una sinopsis de El Juego del Calamar, ya que nunca la había hecho con anterioridad. Ahora sí; sin más preámbulos, comencemos.

El juego del Calamar es una serie surcoreana de drama, suspenso y gore, escrita y dirigida por Hwang Dong-hyuk para el servicio de distribución y streaming de películas y series Netflix. Fue estrenada el 17 de septiembre de este año, con una temporada (aparentemente) de nueve capítulos de aproximadamente una hora. Está protagonizada por Lee Jung-jae como Seong Gi-hun, Park Hae-soo como Cho Sang-woo, Oh Yeong-su como Oh Il-nam y HoYeon Jung como Kang Sae-byeok.

Synopsis and comparison with Alice in Borderland
In the first instance, the series explains why it is called "The Squid Game". A man named Seong Gi-hun, must pay a tremendous debt that puts his life at risk. The guy is a divorced man who lives with his mother and uses his money to gamble at the racetracks. Seeing his life falling apart, he meets a strange man who invites him to play a childish game with him for money. After several attempts, he wins, then the guy invites him to participate in a series of games where he can win much more money and pay off his debt. Seong Gi-hun agrees and this is where the good stuff starts.
I've always liked stories with a mystery and a plot that you don't know what to expect, both Alice in Borderland and The Squid Game, fulfill this atmosphere, although the first one surpasses the other in that aspect, because they still don't finish explaining us: What the hell is going on there, however, that adds to its appeal and with the anxiousness for its long awaited return (I hope so).
The first thing to note in their similarity is the story, and the personality aspects of the main characters. The Asians really know how to create good characters, although you may think that this is just a racial element; which has nothing to do with it, it is very important and it is also general, not that one is Japanese and the other Korean.
The main protagonist in both series is very similar to each other, both are considered "Pariahs" in a society where you have to strive to be somebody in life. They have no money, they have family problems, and they are just looking for a chance to excel and get rid of the stress of their situations. One difference between the two series, is that Seong Gi-hun (The Squid Game), voluntarily enters the games to change his life, while Arisu (Alice in Borderland), we still don't know how he and his friends suddenly appeared in this macabre world of games, and that's one of the things that broke my head in this Japanese series: When the hell are they going to explain how they got there?
Sinopsis y comparación con Alice en Borderland
En primera instancia, la serie nos explica porque se llama “El juego del Calamar”. Un hombre llamado Seong Gi-hun, debe pagar una tremenda deuda que pone en riesgo su vida. El sujeto es un divorciado que vive con su madre y usa su dinero para apostar en los hipódromos. Al ver que su vida se derrumba, conoce a un hombre extraño que le invita a jugar un juego infantil con él por dinero. Después de varios intentos le gana, después el sujeto lo invita a participar en una serie de juegos donde podrá ganar mucho más dinero y así saldar su deuda. Seong Gi-hun accede y aquí es donde comienza lo bueno.
Siempre me han gustado las historias con un misterio y una trama que no sabes que esperar, tanto en Alice in Borderland como El juego del Calamar, cumplen con este ambiente, aunque la primera supera a la otra en ese aspecto, porque todavía no terminan de explicarnos: ¿Que rayos está pasando ahí?, sin embargo, eso le suma a su atractivo y con las ansias puestas para su anhelado regreso (eso espero).
Lo primero que debemos notar en su similitud es la historia, y los aspectos en la personalidad de los personajes protagonistas. Los asiáticos sí que saben crear buenos personajes, aunque pensarán que esto es solo un elemento racial; que no tiene mucho que ver, tiene mucha importancia y además es general, no que una sea japonesa y la otra coreana.
El protagonista principal en ambas series es muy similar el uno al otro, ambos son considerados “Parias” en una sociedad donde debes esforzarte para ser alguien en la vida. No tienen dinero, tienen problemas familiares, y solo buscan una oportunidad para sobresalir y liberarse del estrés de sus situaciones. Una diferencia entre ambas series, es que Seong Gi-hun (El juego del calamar), entra voluntariamente a los juegos para cambiar su vida, en cambio Arisu (Alice in Borderland), todavía no se sabe cómo él y sus amigos aparecieron en ese macabro mundo de juegos de repente, y esa es una de las cosas que me rompieron la cabeza en esta serie japonesa: ¿Cuándo diablos van a explicarnos como llegaron ellos ahí?
Well, leaving those mysteries aside, let's take into account the comparison. Both series are based on games, in which all participants must win to survive, as you only have one chance to escape or win the jackpot. Both series are loaded with intense drama. Horror, desperation, betrayal, survival instinct, a whole cocktail of emotions and situations in which both series leave us hooked. Also worth noting is the potency of the gore in both, it really is sickeningly masterful. I said it before and I'll say it again but in a different way: It's a rather unique aspect of Asian horror cinema.
However, although they are very similar, Alice in bordeland did not receive the level of popularity that its Korean namesake did, why, let's just say it's not, it's been a long time since the release of the first season of Alice in borderland and nowadays there are more and more people who own Netflix in their homes, even on their cell phones. You just have to open the app to see what's trending, we know it's that simple.
Another element to consider could be the plot. In Alice in Borderland there is a lot of mystery, which is brewing, without revealing too much during the whole story until it reaches that open ending that left all its fans crazy. On the other hand, in The Squid Game, the mystery is gradually unveiled until we understand the whole story, however, it leaves us with an unnecessary open ending since the series does not need a second season, but well, if so, I hope it will be as good as the first one.
Bien, dejando a un lado esos misterios, tomemos en cuenta la comparación. Ambas series están basadas en unos juegos, en los que todos sus participantes deberán ganar para sobrevivir, ya que solo tienes una oportunidad para escapar o ganarte el premio mayor. Ambas series están cargadas de intenso drama. El horror, la desesperación, la traición, el instinto de supervivencia, todo un coctel de emociones y situaciones en que ambas series nos dejan enganchados. También cabe destacar la potencia del gore en las dos, de verdad que es repugnantemente magistral. Lo dije antes y lo diré de nuevo pero de otra forma: Es un aspecto bastante particular en el cine de terror asiático.
Sin embargo, aunque son muy similares, Alice in bordeland no recibió el nivel de popularidad que su homónima coreana, ¿por qué?, digamos que no es así, ha pasado mucho tiempo desde el estreno de la primera temporada de Alice in borderland y hoy en día hay cada vez más personas que poseen Netflix en sus casas, incluso en sus celulares. Tan solo tienes que abrir la aplicación para ver que está en tendencia, sabemos que es así de simple.
Otro elemento a considerar podría ser la trama. En Alice in Borderland hay mucho misterio, que se va gestando, sin revelarse demasiado durante toda la historia hasta llegar a ese final abierto que nos dejó locos a todos sus fans. En cambio, en El juego del Calamar, el misterio se va desvelando gradualmente hasta entender toda la historia, sin embargo, nos deja un final abierto innecesario ya que la serie no necesita una segunda temporada, pero bueno, de ser así, espero que sea tan buena como la primera.
Conclusions
Both series are excellent in terms of story, effects and performances. They know how to carry humanity in such situations, playing with a broth of emotions both on screen and with ours. Yes, evidently, they have their differences, not because they are Asian they must be equal, although this perplexing combination is fortuitous and in a society where little by little the taboo of watching gore series is fading, success and popularity are accumulating until creating masterpieces with no limit in creativity. If you haven't seen either of them, I recommend you do, especially if you like this kind of drama and sadism in cinema.
Conclusiones
Ambas series son excelentes en cuanto historia, efectos y actuaciones. Saben cómo llevar la humanidad en ese tipo de situaciones, jugando con un caldo de emociones tanto en pantalla como con las nuestras. Sí, evidentemente, tienen sus diferencias, no es porque sean asiáticas deba ser iguales, aunque esta combinación perpleja es fortuita y en una sociedad donde poco a poco se desvanece el tabú de ver series gore, el éxito y la popularidad se van acumulando hasta crear obras maestras sin límite en creatividad. Si no has visto alguna de las dos, recomiendo que lo hagas, especialmente si te gusta este tipo de drama y sadismo dentro del cine.

I haven't seen any of them yet. I was planning on watching one of them ( The Aquid game ) over the weekend, but it's become so mainstrean, too many people talking about it on social media, etc, that I've been put off watching it. Also, the creator has said that making the second season is going to take a while, so the wait is going to be long.
You must watch it, there are series that no matter their popularity, they are really worth it. As there are series that are very popular and are not worth it, as in the case of La Casa de Papel and Elite.
El juego del Calamar is really worth it.
I always thought it was interesting to compare different characters from one another. Squid-Game is a different show from Alice In Borderlands though, as the former speak more about Korea's social economic issues, whereas Alice in Borderlands deals with the psychological and social aspects of the Japanese people. Also while maintaining that AIB is purely fictional entertainment without a lot of social commentary.
Both characters while they have similar struggles, they have different goals though. Arisu wants to stop the game after an important plot turn. Gi-Hun wants money to help both his mother and his daughter.
Certainly, but there are aspects that connect despite being in different contexts. Also, the end of The Squid Game implies that the protagonist wants to return to stop the games. A somewhat forced twist on the part of the writer.
I have only watched it till episode 7, but damn, that would be a weird twist ending.
