Saigon Attractions: Trang Bang Girdle Cake- Specialty in the South of Vietnam

Whenever I explore a new land, I always try to live as local, I try to get to know them by tasting their food, experiencing their culture as much as possible to be genuinely well understanding the place that I have set foot on.

With this article, I want to introduce to you the specialty of Tay Ninh - a province in the South of Vietnam, the place located 130km of distance from Saigon westward. The specialty called “Bánh tráng Trảng Bàng” is the most well-known food in Tay Ninh. I really regret that I didn’t have any chance to try it when I took a business trip to that province. Fortunately, There is a restaurant specializing in this dish with authentic flavor in Saigon. I went there and had a try.


“Bánh tráng Trảng Bàng” is grafted from the name of food and the name of place. “Trảng Bàng” is the place belonging to Tay Ninh province, and known as a place for producing the food named “Bánh Tráng”.

This type of food is really popular in Vietnam, if you know spring roll, you will know the way of eating it. It is always serves with a big dish of so many types of vegetable, several side dishes such as pickle, cucumber, pineapple, bean sprouts,...This food requires you to make it yourself in your own way. You pick your own ingredients and roll it with girdle cake.


Normally, people use rice paper, but with “Bánh tráng Trảng Bàng”, you use girdle cake which is made in the different way, that is why it is much more special compared to normal rice paper. I heard that this girdle cake is made from local rice and by airing in the fog. That is why it is thicker than other girdle cake but still soft enough to roll and even a bit salty.

You can combine a lot of things in your own roll. There are pettioes meat, beef, pork pie, fried spring roll, ... adding some vegetable, herbs,.. then dipping in the special sauce called “mắm nêm” which must be eatten with “Bánh tráng Trảng Bàng”. Try one bite and you can feel the taste of fog, taste of nature, taste of the South.


If you want to try Tay Ninh specialty in Saigon, this restaurant I recommend you.

  • Staff is attentive and fast.
  • Nit and clean.
    -Crowded all the time, especially in lunch time
    -Be aware that desert is not free even though the staff serves it for you without asking. Dont eat if you don’t want to pay extra.

Food: 7/10

  • It is authentic Tay Ninh specialty.
  • High quality meat, fresh and clean vegi,...
    -It may not fit with taste of Northern people

Price: 6/10

-It is quite high, double of normal one made with rice paper. It is around 5-7$ for one person.

Overall Rate: 7/10
