Hey Steemit!

Since my first Travel Japan series just ended, I was reminded of this really good thick toast that I want to share today! Tbh I don't really have a sweet tooth, so I probably won't be sharing about desserts too often, but this one is special.

The place I want to share today is called Pasela Resorts, and we found this place just walking along the streets of Shibuya in Tokyo way back in Jan 2016!

We were looking for some food and saw their display of these huuuuge thicc toasts in the window.

If you've never seen this before, honey toast (ハニートースト), also known as brick toast, is a Japanese dessert that originated from the district of Shibuya, and is often served at karaoke bars. It is also popular in other parts of the world, most prominently Taiwan and Singapore, and increasingly in Asian neighbourhoods in U.S. and Canada.

I'm not exactly sure when this got popularised, but according to Wiki it was during the Japanese asset price bubble in 1992? I did read that bread became popular in Japan during the postwar Occupation Era as a cheap dietary substitute, and children were eating shokupan; fluffy white bread with thick 1-inch slices, and soft pillowy texture.

I'm not sure if the thick toast trend had come to Singapore back in early 2016, but I had heard of it before, and seeing the display made me want to try it so we headed in!

The interior was really nice and comfortable; the dark wood-like furnishings definitely gave the place warm and cozy vibes.

Turns out they had regular meals too, but we were only interested in the honey toast. They had a few flavours to choose from, and we ultimately decided on chocolate banana; a pretty safe choice.

We waited for a while before our toast finally arrived and we were blown away by how huge it really was!

It was literally a whole loaf of bread, hollowed out into cubes, toasted and glazed with honey, and topped with banana slices, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. 🤤

The cross section looks similar to this:

The honey toast was absolutely delicious! And soo filling! The bread matched really well with the ice cream and bananas. Although I think they could've been a bit more generous with the ice cream. But after finishing the whole loaf both of us were stuffed! I don't think I've ever eaten so much bread at one go before. 😅

So PASELA Resorts is a Karaoke/restaurant franchise and they have quite a number of stores across the country. Their stores are large entertainment complex buildings consisting of decorative Karaoke rooms, bars, party halls, themed cafes, etc. I read that their Akiba branch has 8 floors of entertainment, with each floor offering something unique! And the Shibuya store is believed to be an inventor of Shibuya Honey Toasts! Cool!

We did go back on a subsequent trip to visit their Shinjuku branch and it was really great too! We went during summertime and it was a good way to beat the heat.

I didn't know this at the time, but Pasela partners with a lot of game companies too! They even have gaming-themed cafes, and menu items as well!

For example, to celebrate the release of Persona 5, they opened a collaboration cafe from October to November in 2016!

They even had a CAPCOM bar with menu items from Street Fighter, Megaman, Sengoku Basara, Devil May Cry and Ace Attorney! I wish I had gotten into Ace Attorney sooner because man, I wanna try those drinks so bad.

Pasela also opened a Dragon Quest bar, Final Fantasy cafe, and Kamen Rider restaurant!

If you're into any of these series, you should definitely check those themed cafes out. I'm not exactly sure which ones are permanent, because I read that the CAPCOM bar got replaced by a Monster Hunter bar, so definitely do a search beforehand if you intend to go. I bet it's definitely a unique experience for fans of the series.

Anyway, the honey toast is awesome, and there's plenty of entertainment; I'd say Pasela Resorts is definitely a place to visit when you're in Tokyo. Do check it out!
