An ancient Japanese sport originated from judo ... Judo was created as a physical, mental and moral education in Japan. It is generally characterized as a modern martial art. Its most prominent feature is its competitive element, with the goal of either throwing or knocking the opponent to the ground, immobilizing or otherwise overcoming the opponent by holding, or forcing the opponent to submit using an articulated lock or neck wrap. Punches and pressures with hands and feet as well as armed defense are part of judo, but only in a pre-agreed form and are not allowed in judo competitions or free practice. A person who practices judo is called a judoka.
