I'm not actually feeling surprised if Elon expressed he'd create smartphone.
However unlikely it may sound, it may possibly become reality if not in near future, but distant future too.
- Elon has Space Internet sorted.
- Has Neuralink, working on brain chip implants to help impaired and advance (Biological AGI??) AI.
- Has his very own network of solar power generation network + biggest battery making system in the world along with great chunk of ownership on raw material needed to make the material
- Has excellent team of scientists and researchers in his access with many other smart minds getting attracted to his ventures like magnet.
Overall the real actual efforts to extend human consciousness beyond our planet and possibly our solar system.
The current dominant models of hardware + many other competitors from various big industries + Geopolitical backlash to hurt Elon's efforts can lead him to make own solutions from the ground up!
The push back from dominant phone manufacturers not allowing his neuralink + social media/publishing platform can help grow Elon's vision right according to what he envisions the future. At least from his point of view. Without any distractions or blockers. This level of freedom is extremely helpful and useful for genius minds, and Elon is fortunate enough that he doesn't just has his own personal wealth to help achieve this, but many other big wealth owners along with smart individuals will and can help make this actual reality in less time than ever.
I am not sure that decision was made. He would be smart to do it, another knock to the system.
