My visit to Renusagar thermal power plant: see how this power plant works

I have done an internship from the renusagar power plant which comes under Hindalco industries limited. So in this post I am sharing my experience about how power plant works I am not explaining in detailed or using technical terms so everyone can understand easily.

Hindalco Industries Limited is a flagship company of the Aditya Birla group. This company has been growing ever since it was established in 1958.

Renusagar power plant has an installed capacity of 8o1.57MW (it has 10 generating units of various capacities) is a coal based thermal power plant in which coal is used as a fuel to produce electricity.

BASIC LAYOUT OF POWER PLANT

Coal is brought from the large mines in Uttarakhand, India by trains, here coal is kept in a storage and this coal is used as a fuel in boilers.

The water is drawn from Rihand dam this is the largest Dam of India by volume. The reservoir of Rihand Dam is called Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar.Govind Ballabh Pant Sagar is India's largest artificial lake.

In boilers water is converted to high pressure high temperature steam by burning coal, in this plant water tube boiler in which water is flowing inside the tube and fire is outside thus heat exchange takes place easily through conduction and convection process, this turbine is used to rotate turbine shaft.

Steam turbine extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do mechanical work on a rotating output shaft.
The high pressure high temperature steam steam expands in turbine, the turbine is a cylindrical shaft and fins are mounted on it. The Power in a steam turbine is obtained by the rate of change in momentum of a high velocity jet of steam impinging on a curved blade which is free to rotate.

WORKING CYCLE

Steam power plant works on basic RANKINE CYCLE but current day’s modern steam power plants are using MODIFIED RANKINE CYCLE to include superheating, regenerative feed water heating & reheating.

This steam when expands in turbine strikes to the blades of turbine and spins the turbine, the turbine shaft is coupled with a generator.
Thus the rotation in turbine shaft causes rotation in generator and thus the electricity produces.

After coming from turbine the low pressure low temperature steam then goes to condenser where its cooled by heat exchange with water and this circulated to cooling tower where it is cooled by the help of tons of water and again send to condenser.

The low pressure low temperature steam condensed in the condenser and converts in water then this water is sent again back to boiler with the rest of water.

And the best thing, I have got an accidental insurance worth $3125 for two years too...
