[Opinion] We need to rename Net Neutrality

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

I was browsing reddit today and I noticed the reddit user /u/ConnerDavis post made an excellent point about Net Neutrality.

The long and short of his comment is that when people are asked about net neutrality, with no explanation of what it is, they tend to align with party lines. However, once people understand the whole idea of “Net Neutrality”, the majority support it.

This shows what the problem is. The name "Net Neutrality" does not describe the issue at hand adequately. We need to rename "Net Neutrality" in a way that everyone understands what it means. My personal suggestions are either "Internet Freedom" or "Internet Fairness" as net neutrality guarantees them both. I pass additional brainstorming on to the community to come up with words that accurately describe the issue. The idea is that it will kick people into action when they hear the news that "The FCC votes to repeal Internet Freedom" instead of "The FCC votes to repeal Net Neutrality."

The method that I am trying to replicate here is used often by politicians to reframe the issue at hand to get a better response out of the people. A perfect historical example of its effectiveness is the renaming of the 'estate tax' to the 'death tax'. This snippet from the documentary "The Persuaders" explains how it works perfectly :

If we want to win this battle, we need to make sure that everyone understands the issue as it affects us all. One of the simplest way to do this is to rename the issue as currently the average person does not understand "net neutrality' and the implications if it is removed.
