To be honest - I think Steem needs a lot of work.
It seems like a free-for-all without any real direction. Content is all over the place. Some people post a picture of a rock and get some votes that make it worth something and others craft a well written and thought out article which never sees the light of day for more than a minute as it skims off the front page.
This is a big problem because it will discourage newcomers to the platform - especially ones that think their well written article will actually be seen.
It really needs and "internal only" search mechanism too - If I remember correctly that is super easy to set up with the Google search bar that Steem currently uses.
I've come and am checking it out but I'm getting a little discouraged and am seriously thinking of just moving on.
You're not alone, friend. Many people feel this way about Steemit, but we must remember that Steemit is still in Beta testing.
There is currently a waiting list to even get an account right now with an approval confirmation.
That being said, it can be very challenging and something that must not to taken lightly to start a blog that makes money consistently.
Hard work and perserverance are key in this respect; it may take years to get a successful operation going that you are able to live off of.
Of all the choices for social media platforms you could use though, hitching your wagon to Steemit will give you the greatest benefit from your input, escpecially if it continues to grow at its current pace.
Your Steem Power is very valuable and Steem has been acruing in value since its inception.
Cast your net wide, @cactii and you will go far.

I believe all upvotes should carry equal weight.
That would put the emphasis on content and remove the odd dynamic that Steem has developed.
