Pizza Delivery Startup Is Close To Full Automation

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

One food delivery startup in San Francisco, known as Zume Pizza, is close to reaching a fully automated process, thanks to the help of robots and AI. They've just this week announced the addition of the Doughbot into their pizza-making process.

According to those who founded the company, they wanted to bring robots in to take over tasks where human employees were bored, where they were engaged in a task that wasn't deemed to be safe, or for doing a task that is very physically taxing for humans.

Speed & Quality...

They have turned to robots to take over tasks like making pizza dough and they've fittingly named the robot Doughbot and it's already working on the assembly line.

The robot is able to press the pizza dough roughly 5x faster than human workers, it makes a perfectly flat pizza crust every 9 seconds. With the addition of their Doughbot it's going to lower the pizza-making process by an average of 36 seconds.

The food startup was founded several years ago and they just recently expanded their delivery services and are pioneering a new way of delivering pizza with their decentralized delivery model.

It's estimated that they can have the pizza to the door of the customer in around four minutes thanks to their highly efficient and streamlined process. Right now, the only job that humans are doing for the pizza process is putting the toppings on the pizzas, the robots do everything else.

The company is aggressively competing when it comes to delivery times and who knows how many customers that might entice to opt for purchasing a pizza from them, when it can be there within 10 minutes or less, whereas most other big pizza chains are going to take sometimes an hour or more depending on where you live.

The reason that they are quicker at getting the pizza to the customer is because they have trucks that bake the pizza on the way to where it is going.

The pizza is quite often going to arrive to the customers house much fresher than if it had come from one of the other chains because of this bake it on the way process.

After it comes out of the oven with traditional chains, the product then needs to travel in the car before it gets to the house and this is why it often won't be as fresh than if it had gotten to you in 5 minutes or less; fresh right out of the oven. Zume is adding scooters to their business as well so that they can work along with the food trucks. Also, Zume doesn't always hit the 5 min delivery mark, for those who place orders that aren't in the truck's pre-loaded orders then it can take sometimes 45 minutes.

But for many who do order though, they are able to experience the quick service time of around 4 minutes for their pizza. And this isn't the only food delivery company that has incorporated robots or AI technology, there are others even in the San Francisco area and also delivering meals in other places around the world as well.

It looks like Zume almost wants to imitate the same vision that Amazon shared previously, with their idea for having flying warehouses that drones would be able to connect with, operating together like one big network.

Zume is a lot different from other pizza restaurants in that they obviously have much fewer employees. It's alleged that not a single employee has ever quit from their establishment and for those who do work for the company, they are allotted education subsidies, along with shares in the business, and provided with full benefits. Their “co-bot” workforce model is one that perhaps we might see imitated at many other companies in the near future. At the end of the day, it's the people ( the customers ) who are going to be deciding the success of these companies and whether or not they live or die. So far the Zume company has already delivered well over 10,000 pizzas.

The pizza is quite often going to arrive to the customers house much fresher than if it had come from one of the other chains because of this bake it on the way process.

Now that is fascinating. There are so many mobile business services cropping up but I never saw a pizza making service coming into existence.

Also, the part about scooters working alongside the fleet of delivery trucks at Zume made me think of Spider-Man on his scooter delivering pizzas. 🛵🍕

Man, I was about to echo your comment, but I'll say this. THIS IS NEXT LEVEL PIZZA!

Haha. As long as it tastes good, I am in !

Wow that's pretty neat. Ideally as many automated tasks as possible should be assigned to robots so us human beings can focus our attention on developing solutions for the bigger issues in this world. Unfortunately right now robotics is used to compete which causes disruptions in the the job market and so most likely many of these awesome innovations are being suppressed to keep a more or less "stable" economy going and not put too many people out of business and out of a job. Imagine how our society would flourish if technology wasn't used to compete but rather to contribute to serve and build on the whole.

Hah...Oh I just thought the person above me was pretty. :-)

Interesting, and for me no surprise that this is in San Francisco. Technology has come a long, long ways and I wonder how long it is before we this in other food establishments. The next thing wonder about is how good is the pizza? Next time I am visiting up there maybe I'll have to order a pizza from them!

With technology coming in food industry more value addition is being done. I hope they do not charge more now to cover the robot cost.

Theyll probably charge what the competition is charging while getting higher profits. Having robots is actually cheaper than humans now. I was looking into buying a $20k sandwich making robot. They can work 24/7 , it's a one off investment that pays for itself rather quickly.

Wow, this is the future! Too bad it is a private company so I cannot invest in their stock (if this was possible I should but stocks again after a few years of only crypto's) The only thing Zume has to do is add blockchain technology and an app to fully automize it.

Ok, Love this post but I have a Big Problem! I Love pizza and am on a Diet and this isn't helping matters:)

Oh no, oh no, the robots can take over everything else but not pizza. Please ffs don't let them take pizza from us. Ready the E.M.P. boys, this is war!

The technology seems to improve the pizza services to customers, so it will be a success. But what will happen to the people who used to do these jobs? More robots in the future but more unemployment too

That's why I think we need a robot tax to fund an UBI program. Drivers, fast food workers, call centre employees, etc are going to be out of a job in 5 years. If we dont have a solution in place soon we're going to see riots on the streets.

Seems like they are trying to make humans obsolete. I think UBI is given out to temporarily stop the riots. And then in 5 years time most people will be out of jobs. But i can't see any solutions. Robots are faster stronger, and work without pay, and don't sue their employers

Wow, i'd really like to try pizza from them. First time i hear about decentralized delivery system with pizza. I've seen pizza food trucks like this

how cool is that :) ? that's awesome, but if every pizza brand does this then we will see a lot of people losing jobs, the futur is weird, very scary :)

now you just need drone delivery and you are all set! Congrats

Nice post and pizza....

Cool Cool: I am not excited about this!

realy i like pizza:)
i follow you

I would definitely like to see a short documentation about how this works.
Please keep us updated 🍕

This is so interesting! Thank you for sharing. I'm always fascinated by the new tasks that bots and AI could accomplish at a much more efficient way. I do hope Zume, by saving a lot of menial work for humans, could put a human touch back to the Pizza business, because at the end of the day, a human touch is what short in supply, not pizzas...

Baked inside the truck as it is on the way to be delivered? That is pure genius. I don't like the idea of jobs becoming fully automated because that means less jobs for live people. I do appreciate they reward their workers though with the education subsidies and shares in the company though.

There goes the career aspirations of too many!

Wow a pizza to your house in just 4 minutes! Better yet, where can buy Doughbot and install it in my house to get some fast and tasty pizza on the go 24/7? ;)

It looks like the only part of the pizza making process that they haven't been able to automate yet is placing toppings. I think AI should be able to help Zume get over that hump as well.

And so the process of phasing out humans with robots begins.....

Yeah a little sprinkle of tensor flow should do the trick

Machine learning and tensor flow FTW - instant toppings, here we come!

This will completely change the pizza game!! Amazing thing they are doing!

Awesome concept, I'm going to have to order one of their pizzas sometime to see how long it really takes to arrive!

Pizza is always pizza. No matter how it is made , it will always taste the same !

i beg to defer, you need to try a wood-fired pizza made by a highly skilled italian chef...

The reason that they are quicker at getting the pizza to the customer is because they have trucks that bake the pizza on the way to where it is going.

I mean, it sounds like a great concept, until you get in a accident and someone ends up with a ton of hot cheese and sauce all over them. :P

Pizza i can't diet cause Pizza...Good Information brother....Keep Steem on me @willyfavindy dont forget follow me n Upvote

to me, it is fully automated when it goes from oven to drone.☺

oh man! if this pie taste good then it is GAME OVER!!!! lol

Waiting for that time when we all get annoyed because of a system update to our favorite pizza place! yey! :O

Haha...Now if they only accepted Cryptos for that it would be the first perfect accommodation!
