Microsoft has released a new plug-in for Word, Outlook and Powerpoint, in which users can type words, change font, add bullet, wrap text to next line and so much more by using voice input through the Cortana's voice recognition technology.

This new technology is renamed as Dictate.

Microsoft is not the first company to introduce similar products. Nuance has been publishing a similar product named Dragon for some time, and this software supports both desktop and mobile devices. In addition, in 2016 Google also expanded the Doc's voice input function.

Office software has long been supporting the voice to text function, but Dictate has way more perfect function. It supports more than 20 input languages and multiple voice editing commands, such as "newline", "delete", "stop dictation", etc., you can move the cursor and modify the file through voice; in addition, you can also execute punctuation input.

Dictate also supports instant translation. After the relevant settings, Dictate will translate what you say, that is, you can speak Spanish, but let the system output French. Dictate can translate the 20 input languages right now, and expected to expand into more than 60 output languages.

Dictate also supports 32 and 64-bit versions of the office, but requires a minimum system version of Windows 8.1. At present, the plug-in can be downloaded free of charge, but because it is a Microsoft garage application, the future development is still unknown.

Looks like Siri type of feature is going to be in every applications you can use, no matter which OS, which HW platform. Now the problem is, how many different type of voice recognition system you have to deal with everyday and how do you adapt the differences among them.

I don't know whether it is new technology, or I misunderstand the techni behind it. As it seems liek the voice input function is not really a big invention. It seems like it had been developed many years ago. But just that at that time the technology came out, it hardly recongnize your voice and input, it always input those wrong wrong for it. Hope it is a technology worth using this time!

Hopefully they can make it more user friendly, one down side of microsoft are that they contains too much functions in 1 software making users who are not familiar to their platform not being anle to fully utilise their software to suit their purpose.
