Amazing cars for the future

in #technology6 years ago

The recent scandals around diesel-powered vehicles by some of the largest automotive manufacturers raised a great discussion about the sustainability of those engines. While this debate is going on, the majority of the industry seemed to realize the potential of electric engines and followed the Tesla role model. In the last few years a lot of start-ups, as well as established companies, were showing off their idea of the future. While these concepts are interesting, for us consumers, the reality is usually more important.

Act of contrition: I.D

When talking about the diesel scandal, there is no way around Volkswagen. The image of the VW brands suffered a lot of damage. In order to repair this damage and take a step towards a cleaner future, VW introduced the I.D. series.

The focus of this concept series is very clear. Electric engines, autonomous capabilities, and modern design are the tickets to the future of Volkswagen. The cars of the I.D. are planned to be cheaper and to have more range than current competitors. Production and sale start is planned in 2020.

Sporty DNA: Porsche Mission E

Porsche is known for fast and sporty cars. This trend will continue in an all-electric future with the Porsche Mission E. With more than 600 HP and a suggested range of more than 500km the car will surpass all current premium electric vehicles.

The modern and sporty design of the car literally screams Porsche. To reduce charging times Porsche chose a system voltage of 800 Volts. A DC charger can bring the car from 0% to 80% in 15 minutes. The official launch is planned in 2019.

The I-Pace

The I-Pace will be the first electric vehicle by the British car manufacturer Jaguar. The modern design perfectly combines performance and luxury.

In terms of specs, the vehicle comes with around 500km of range, DC fast-charging, powered by 400HP for a 0-100km acceleration the car needs 4.8s.

The beauty of the autonomous cars is how not nearly as many people won't have to own a car (hopefully). It'll be an uber like society where . I call a car to take me where I need and it feels a little less awkward than in an uber becuse there is no stranger driver . The amazing part being that if less people own cars than we wont need to devote as much open space to parking lots and we can make better use of that space.

In theory, this idea is great, but I think the number of car owners will not decrease as dramatically as some people think. But this number will shrink in densely populated urban areas where space is and will become really expensive. Letting the cars parked outside the city and only picking up the passengers will reduce the traffic in cities and increase the living standards.
I'm looking forward to the first mass-market ready autonomous vehicles even though the recent incidents with Tesla and Uber might push the date a little bit further into the future.
