If you want fast, NVMe is the fastest you can get in a consumer computer. A typical hard disk is around 150MB/s while an SSD is about 350-500MB/s. NVMe? 3,500/MB/s!
That's not the best part, random access performance is incredible compared to spinning platters. That's where solid state devices like SSD and NVMe really shine.
Samsung really owns the solid state market, both SSD & NVMe. Samsung has the best performance and the best price for performance. They have been untouchable for a few years now for the consumer market.
I have the 960 non-pro model and wish I had known the 970 was coming out. The Pro pricing has come down tremendously with the 970 series. If you want to make your system scream, NVMe is where it is at. But you need a high speed M.2. port.

Glad you asked, SSD is a solid state device (meaning no moving parts) that uses the SATA bus. This caps at around 550MB/s per port. NVMe attaches directly to the PCI-Express bus using 4 channels allowing for nearly 4,000MB/s theoretical throughput per slot.
Wear performance
Samsung has a five year warranty on this drive, and the Pro series has a much better write capacity. Although recent tests show actual write life is far longer than what is stated on the package.
