THE 5G REVOLUTION

It seemed yesterday when SMS was something revolutionary. A valid technology to communicate with others via text message, no matter where they are. If there is something restless in this world, that is technology and soon, the leap was made to 4G smartphones, with the internet present in mobile devices.

This coming decade, a new leap will take place in telecommunications. 5G plans to turn the current communication model upside down.

But what advantages will 5G have? Let's find out. For this, in the following lines I will focus on three points: scalability, speed and low latency.

Scalability: this concept refers to the capacity of the network to support a certain number of devices. 5G is expected to trigger scalability, making networks much more efficient to allow more data to circulate. Thus, in a space that today holds 4 connected devices, this new technology will hold 400.

This greater capacity will bring the possibility of developing the long-awaited Internet of Things, in which most of the objects will be connected to the Internet.

Speed: connections will be 100 times faster, both on Wi-Fi networks and on Smartphones. An increase in image quality is expected, and the possibility of viewing videos instantly. 5G will make possible 20 GB connections at home, solving the problem of slow downloads.

A dream for moviegoers.

Low latency: Latency is the response time on connections, which is expected to decrease 90% with 5G, down to times of a millisecond. Perhaps in this way it does not express much, but you should know that this opens a multitude of doors to technology.

Thus, remote operations will be possible, where the doctor will be able to operate on the patient without the need to physically share the room.

How much is left for the arrival of 5G? We hope that it will begin to be present at the beginning of this decade. However, it still has to overcome some obstacles, such as the high cost of infrastructure.

Hardware is, today, a drag on the leading companies in this technology. To develop it, companies must increase investment in infrastructure by around 10%, thus increasing their spending figures. Therefore, it is to be expected that in such an incipient market, companies will play their cards wisely before diving into the new digital pool.

What seems clear are the new possibilities that 5G opens for the world economy. A technology that will increase the emergence of the disruptive internet, making our societies smarter.
