Lawn Tennis for Beginners - Choosing a Racket

When playing tennis for the first time, the first thing you need to have is a racket. Here is an example of a racket and its parts:

Now, in choosing a racket, the things I usually check for are the overall weight and weight distribution of the racket. Some rackets weigh more than others and as for weight distribution, there is the HH (Head Heavy) and HL (Head Light). For beginners, I would suggest you use a lightweight and Head Light racket. Lighter rackets are easier to swing and maneuver and HL rackets have more weight on the handle, also allowing for easier movement. Once you have developed your skills and power, it is a good idea to practice using a heavier racket that has a HH. Heavier rackets will provide more control and stability on the swing as well as reduce shock and vibration upon impact. Experienced players who can generate their on power on the swing will use a heavier racket for control.

There are also rackets designed for kids who want to play tennis called junior rackets. They are rackets designed to have a shorter handle and throat. They are designed to be lightweight for kids who cannot handle the weight and power of a normal racket.
