A large number of students fail in English every year in public examinations. Though English is thought as a compulsory subject from class one to Honours level, the rate of failure is a matter of worry and disappointing for the whole nation.
English holds the prestige of being an International language. In this globalized world we cannot make progress without learning this language. As a part of development process, English is thought as a compulsory subject in all levels of our educational institutions. But the teaching and learning of English in Bangladesh are not bringing more success. A large number of students fail in English every year in public examinations.

There are obviously reason behind students failure in English. The main reason is that English is a foreign language. Most of the students are not keen to learn English. What they always seek, is to cross the barriers of the examination. To majority of the students, learning English is unpleasant and examination is fearful. They have a tendency to memories the answers. That is why they loss there real interest in learning the language. All these contribute to the cause of students failure in the examination as well as failure to learn the language effectively.
Experts opine that the situation should be addressed strongly, and an all- out effort should be taken to improve the condition of the teaching and learning of English in Bangladesh.
