Oh, sorry, this was a post from another forum where I had already explained in detail. I forgot I hadn't been putting that here too.
This is a software Orrery that I wrote for my phone wallpaper. It calls up the positions of the Planets once a day, spaces them around the geocentric "sky" and then rotates it throughout the day. This gives me a general sense of where the planets are and what I can expect to see when I go out at night to smoke my pipe.
A fourth possible solution is to distort the horizon lines on the reticule. Fold the East and West pointing ones toward the north or south depending on the time of year. That would also give me an instant visualization of the length of day, and actually seems like a better solution as long as it doesn't end up looking funny.
I love the random cool things you come up with. Sounds like a wallpaper people would totally download/buy if you ever made it available 😆

Unfortunately the folks who use the configuration programs it requires are mostly interested in partially clothed women or anime figures. But thanks! I really like it. I want to add a gold bezel around it with astrological/astronomical information and maybe overlay that with an analog clock indication. Make it a little more steampunkish. But first I have to fix the planets.
