WHAAAAT?
Here I am... an ignorant Portuguese who doesn't know his own capital city.
Well, it's not that bad. Really!
It's one of those facts that almost nobody knows.
Here is the truth:
The King D. Afonso III lived in Coimbra until 1255. By then, Lisbon was already more developed than Coimbra, mostly because the harbors in the Tagus river allowed merchant ships to arrive to the city. The King decided to move and take his family to Lisbon.
The thing is...
Not him and not any other King after him signed any official document to establish Lisbon as the Portuguese capital.
It became regarded as such because the court was living there permanently.
Conclusion: To this day the official capital of Portugal is still Coimbra!

Didn't know it either!! I'm a bad portuguese!! ;)
But hey, Lisbon is the Portugues capital, only lacking papers! :)
So, it's an undocumented capital? Or is it an illegal capital?
I think only the change of cities is undocumented. Officialy Lisbon is the capital :)
Eu pensava que era Porto. :)
