Internet connection speed: recording and timestamping

in #timestamplast year (edited)

Today I had a connectivity problem while accessing an internet server on my smartphone. The phone was connected through the Wi-Fi connection in my home, a "mesh" based on AVM's "Fritz!" products.
So I started analysing the issue and considering the possibilities:

  1. at the 2 ends, the problem might have been from the remote server, or perhaps from my smartphone (a low end Galaxy A 52 which might have been in need of a restart).
  2. moving down the line, perhaps it was an issue with my ISP.
  3. If not, it might have been a problem with one of my routers, perhaps in need of a restart.

I began by testing my internet speed - so went to the computer, connected through an Ethernet cable directly through the Fritz! Box and typed "fast.com"
It responded quickly so clearly my ISP had no problem, neither was there an issue with my main router

This clearly pointed to either the Wi-Fi repeater or the "ends" (the remote server or my phone).

It turned out it was my Wi-Fi repeater that needed a restart.

I stopped a second though to record (for posterity) the internet speed as measured by

  1. fast.com (Netflix)
  2. speedtest.net (Ookla)

As you can see in the pictures below, the measured values are VERY different (download speed measured by fast.com is more than 50% higher than the one measured by Ookla), but are still in a similar "ballpark".

Fast.com lists the connection speed as 1.1Gbps
Ookla measures 739 Mbps download, 383 Mbps upload

What will the internet speeds be 10 years from now?
fast.com is a site run by Netflix

speedtest.net is another popular site for measuring the internet connection speed, that used to be known as "Ookla"

What is your internet connection speed?

Run the test and post screenshots in the comments section!
