Nine Reasons Why You Should Travel Solo (At Least Once)

in #travel6 years ago

In the summer of 2013, I went on a minimalism spree, packed up all my things, broke into my savings account, leased a car in Europe, and went on a six-month trip alone. Like most stories of self-discovery and awakenings, one day I realized my life was passing me by and I’ve pushed things aside thinking I would one day get around to doing it.

I've always dreamed of backpacking throughout Europe after I graduated from college. Ten years later I was still dreaming about it. Then something snapped. I was done dreaming. I was going to Europe and nothing could have stopped me. Off I went and alone by myself.

It was very unnerving at first, I have traveled nowhere alone before, let alone for half a year in a place where I knew absolutely no one. In hindsight, I could have planned the trip better. I had no real plans, just a bunch of scribbles on a notebook and few dots on Google maps. I would let the wind take me where it flowed. Looking back, traveling solo, was the best decision I ever made in my life.

Here’s why I recommend traveling solo.

1 - You only plan for yourself

Traveling solo, you only have to worry about your own agenda and need not work around anybody else's schedule. That means you can be more spontaneous and be more flexible. It can be a challenge to coordinate with others and if their agenda doesn't match yours, you must do things that are not necessarily what you want to do to be considerate.

When you travel alone, you do not have to please anyone but yourself. When I travel, I have every intent on taking great photos and that usually means working with what the natural surroundings give me. I have to wait for the right light, go to a better place, or wait around for the perfect moment. That would drive somebody insane if they've had to follow me around gallivanting for the perfect shot.

2 - You are your own great company

You would be surprised at how enjoyable solitude can be. Constantly being surrounded by people, noise, and always being "on" doesn't give your brain a chance to rest. Being alone gives your brain to reboot and revitalize itself. Solitude makes concentration easier and allows you to discover yourself and find your own purpose.

3 - It's easier to meet new people

If you’re an extrovert, traveling alone should be easy for you to meet locals and make new friends. But if you're an introvert like me, you're forced to come out of your comfort zone when you travel alone. You're likely to approach and talk to complete strangers out of necessity and it will feel natural. Whether you're couch-surfing, staying at hostels, on the train, and in the bus. You'll meet complete strangers, you will have to interact with them, and you'll become accustomed to it, improving your social skills.

4 - It builds your confidence

Traveling makes you a better person, but traveling alone makes you an awesome person. The sense of empowerment gained from not needing anyone else is a major boost to your confidence. I don't know how often I've heard from other travelers I've met that it takes a certain amount of "cojones" to travel around the continent of Europe by myself. You get extra creds and respect from traveling solo, people admire those who travel alone.

5 - It improves your decision-making skills

You're completely alone. A master of your own destiny. Each decision is made only by you and only for you. Nobody's there to guide you but yourself. My decision-making skill was sorely lacking before my solo trip. Constantly second guessing myself instead of just going for it. Traveling solo drives you to make quicker and more solid decisions.

6 - Absolutely No drama

Traveling solo is like being single, no drama. No, hurt feelings and no tip-toeing around anybody's fragile emotions. I've traveled with an ex before were the minor thing that shouldn't even matter quickly grew into a blazing fire that made the trip unbearable. There's nothing worse than traveling with somebody who doesn't want to be in the same room with you or who wants to poke one of your eyeballs out with a fork.

7 - You learn more about yourself

I've learned more about myself in the six months I've been in Europe than all the years I've been on this planet. My goals have become clearer. My purpose more sincere. I found out about what I wanted out of life and how I want to live my life. It's like having a Eureka moment over and over again.

8 - More Adventures!

When you travel alone it's one big giant adventure that will spawn mini ones, often good and sometimes not so good. Most often, unscripted adventures, like the one time I nearly got devoured by an army of rabid goats, or that time when I got detained for drugs in Norway, or even that time when I accidentally ordered raw steak.

Popradské Pleso

9 - It's The Ultimate Freedom

You do what you want when you want, whatever you want, wherever you want, whoever you want...well, that'll take work. But you know what I mean. It's all about you and nobody but you. There will be no comprises. No drama. No Regrets. You're a master of your own destiny.

Traveling alone is not just a journey to places, it's a journey to your soul. It's a journey to find yourself and who you truly are. So if you can't find a travel companion or have doubts, don't even second guess yourself, just go! The rewards you reap may just be greater than places you discover.

This really inspired me to take the trip on my motorcycle as a solo trip rather than going with other people!

This is definitely one of the best ways to live life.

My first solo travel will definitely be around west Africa when my budget allows. Thinking about experiencing new culture, new people, new food etc is already goose bumps.

I am definitely bookmarking this for future use.

One day I would like to go to West Africa as well... my uncle has a little place in The Gambia he said it's a hidden paradise.

Ahh .. there is the Paella cooking class! Fun, would love to see the final product!

The weird thing is I never traveled alone but then Mike had to fly back home from Vietnam because of a medical issue and I stayed behind to finish the blog for the 3 remaining weeks. It was such a different experience. And both has its advantages and disadvantages.

As for the Paella...one too many Sangria! So, the pictures went MIA (I wasn't trying to rhyme!). I definitely loved the freedom of not having to consult someone where and when I wanted to go but kinda miss not having anyone to share the experience with!

I can see that and you don't have anyone to have your back when you get into weird situations. I always love having Mike with me when I film or take pictures. He watches out that I don't walk into people or someone is taking advantage of me not paying attention. Well now you got someone to travel with. Ha!

it would be more beautiful if you want to share your experience with us,
because we really need it ..,
thank you for you
thanks for the experience you share

I just Bookmarks this page.
I enjoyed scrolling down and seeing each new part of your adventure...almost like I went on the walk with you! Keep up the fun work! Beautiful travel photos!

Your point about personal freedom and lack of drama certainly hit home with me. My worst holidays were those in which I travelled either with a difficult family member or tyrannical spouse (now an ex). I've read that it's a good idea to do a road trip or travel weekend before you get married in order to see how a person copes with irritating travel challenges or surprises.

Oh god...the infamous tyrannical partner! I've had a girl friend I went to India with for 6 months. What a trip that was!

Turned out I used that experience as a test to find the love of my life! It wasn't the tyrannical ex.

Oh man... I traveled alone and in a group and just my wife and I and now we travel together!

They're all really good ways to travel in their own ways. They all have their own benefits. But I do agree with what you say about being FREE to chose whatever you want, with no drama and none of the compromises you get in a group....

Nice one @adonisabril and really good photos, they just woke up the travel bug in me!!!

following you

I can attest to both, I married a traveler :)

Nice! There's a saying in french that sort of translates to Traveling keeps you young!

Travel On my friend

My wife always wanted to travel the world so She ended up marrying a traveler :)

Hell yeah. Traveling solo it's soon to become the next - and probably most intense, fun and interesting - chapter in my life.

And little nudges like this article help a great deal. Cheers, man!

Go for it man!

I have been to Europe in 2015 for solo trip and it was very much worthy. One can explore oneself and other things at faster rate. All you have to do is to carry yourself while enjoying nature and surroundings around you. All you have is Independence Independence Independence
I totally agree with u @adonisabril that one should go for it

Very nice post. I have travelled alone quite a bit. Being forced to talk to strangers is a great thing. Meeting and interacting with local people you are able to see sights that aren't always in the guide books. I can't recommend traveling solo enough. thanks for your post looking forward to the next one.

So true, you get so many experiences you can even touch with a 10 ft pole when you're alone... I do miss it. But now I wouldn't want to travel without my little family

Agreed, solo travelling is the best. Sometimes I have companions but not for long, as our plans never fully match. Instead of trying to fit I just leave. Solitude can be equaled to freedom sometimes.

Couldn't agree more! I love traveling by myself for all the reasons you have listed, but after I had been traveling solo for 17 months, I started to miss something.. It was great to come back home to have long-known friends around for more than just a few days. I will still travel solo in the future, but I can't see myself traveling solo forever - I think you have done everything right there!

One chapter in your life closes so another one opens :)

Working on my courage to take a solo trip. Really loving the idea of discovering myself and be independent without being tied up by other people..

You are correct that traveling alone should be tried at least once. I did it twice and didn't like the experience. Probably it was like that since I'm the kind of person who need to share a joy or excitement with a friend/partner.

#1 is the best , not having to make plans around other people , the worst thing when you travel with someone abd they ask “ what are we gonna do today?” I’m the spontaneous type abd evrb of injust end up taking a hike or chilling in a crowded area people watching , I’m all good !
( resteemed so I can read through it all later )

Loved this- gorgeous pics and your writing if growth and exploring, just wonderful!

Great post! happy i found your account, always looking for travel-minded people, Upvoted.
traveled for four years and post about it now, never traveled alone for that long, hope more people will just dare to do it!

it is always my dream travelling alone, and yes! it is indeed self fulfilling you get to discover a lot of yourself and decision making skills enters.
I hope soon I can travel more often. This is surely a hit for those people wanting to travel but hesitant to do so.
Thank You for inspiring people! God Bless!
I'm new here and looking forward to new beginnings! upvote my posts thanks a lot!

I really agree, solo travel is the best trip in my opinion. Because loneliness can make us free to express ourselves in nature and solitude is a freedom without limit. Success always make you Bro @adonisabril.
Best Regard @ airil280708

great that you decided to do it after 10 yrs! yep solo traveling can be less stressful if you dont have to plan everything together, but then again depending on who you are traveling with it has its advantages as well :)

I totally agree that you learn so much about yourself when traveling alone. holiday its nice but also you grow as a person. i went to usa alone 2 years ago i know one person from the internet. It changed my life in many ways
so now a moved to Canada.
good pictures and article as always.

thank you :)

You make a lot of good points and I wish I could go travel alone, but I think it's a lot harder being a girl and trying to travel alone.

I like your thoughts on this subject. Great post, just wants to make me pack and go traveling...

Yeah read all of it now. All the things you have said I can relate to. I took an even greater leap and moved to Japan 11 years ago not knowing anyone and living in the countryside. while I did have work I had the summer off to explore and do the solo travel. I did indeed get to know myself better and cultivate better decision making skills. Now I'm ready for another adventure but I have a wife and kids in this foreign land. I shall find a way to do some solo traveling in the future for sure though. Good read man.

good posslt, i like

The best answer to travel alone is that you grow as a person. Traveling alone is more cool

You're absolutely right! I've traveled solo and is an opportunity to grow and to know yourself better. And I agree with the no drama part. Is not only easier to plan it. You also enjoy so much more! I liked your post! Greetings!

wooow just wow amazing photos and journeys my friend please for exact locations i love the nature beauty , and i agree about the solo travelling are more like piece of mind and soul rest and spiritual journey . i went once to Asia my farther destination for a month alone and was great im up to more !
