Last year, I took the boat shown below from Charleston to Fort Sumter. It is a short boat ride, but a beautiful tour to take.
When you are driving south into Charleston, you pass over the bridge that is shown in the photo below. This is how you know you are almost in Charleston.
Charleston is a beautiful coastal town that is on a peninsula in South Carolina. Part of the peninsula was filled in around the late 1700's and early 1800's, so that the development could grow on the southern part of the peninsula. Here are the homes that sit towards the southern tip of the peninsula.
It took about 30 minutes for the boat to dock at Fort Sumter. This Fort is named after a Revolutionary War hero named General Thomas Sumter.
This Fort is famously known as being the place that the first shots were fired at the beginning of the Civil War. At the time of the first battle, the Fort was not fully constructed. There was a second battle held at Fort Sumter, and after this battle, the Fort was left in rubble. However, as you can see in the photos below, the Fort has nicely been restored since then.
Here are some close ups of the cannons that would have been used during battles.
The photo cannot do the real experience justice, but I found it quite breathtaking to look through the windows and be able to see Charleston in the background. In this photo, it is almost too small to actually see the details.
The fort had an upstairs balcony with a gift shop and an amazing view. From the balcony, you could really get a great glimpse back at Charleston.
The balcony also provide a good 360 degree view and you could gaze upon the ocean and even a marshy area near the fort.

I try to go to places such as that but most of the time I try to find a little bit of history to places I go.

Thanks! I used to put the location with steemitworldmap, but I took a long break from blogging, so I'm still remembering the tips and tricks. I will have to keep that in mind next time I make a travel post.
