I almost didn't make the trip to Capri. That would have been a HUGE mistake because this is one of the most picturesque places. It's also small enough to walk if you're so inclined. That's what I did. I started off heading from the Marina Grande toward the Gardens of Augustus, making a few stops in the town of Capri along the way. The gardens are beautiful but what truly makes it breathtaking is the fact that they are on a cliffside overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
I spent quite a bit of time here just taking in the views and wishing the winding Via Krupp below was open. This road is often closed due to the danger of falling rocks.
If it had been open, I would have taken the risk.
After leaving the gardens I headed to the beach at Marina Piccola below. This beach had a nice mixture of sand and rock. I basked in the sun here for a while before deciding to head back to Marina Grande, the port of arrival.
After making a few stops, I made it to Marina Grande where I accidentally stumbled upon the Phoenician Steps. These steps (~1000) were built by the Ancient Greeks between the 7th and 6th centuries and were the only way to reach Anacapri above before 1874.
Having stumbled upon the steps, I had no idea what I was getting into but the views along the way were absolutely stunning. I had started my slow ascent to Anacapri without even knowing. I read that women had to carry vases of water from below using these steps (daily) before the roads were created. I find that impressive as well as a subtle form of torture.
The steps can be fairly steep in spots and therefore dangerous if not careful but 100% worth it. While taking rest stops, you can view the entire Capri half of the island. The land across the sea in the photo is the coast of Sorrento. I continued my slow ascent to Anacapri and happened to find more breathtaking surprises above but I'll have to save them for another post because they haven't finished downloading. If you ever have the chance to visit Capri and enjoy the Mediterranean, then I highly suggest hopping on a ferry from the mainland and exploring this gem.
