The view from the bottom is pretty good too, on a clear day. But then I guess you'd need a clear day for the awesome view from the top as well.

It is indeed. This year the summit seems to have had a lot of cloud cover blocking the view for most of the time, as you would have noticed with the crown cloud when you saw Mt. Fuji. The view from the top can be amazing even if there is some cloud, with the view flowing through in places as cloud clears. Sunrise is actually best if there is a little cloud, as it catches the changing light and fills the sky with amazing colours. Plus if the cloud is below you then the cloud sea effect is absolutely breathtaking.
