Eating out

Went for a pub lunch with the Mother-in-Law on Sunday. It was quite a culture shock after being in France even just for 10 days. It really brings home to you how much respect they have for food and the experience of eating together in contrast to the rushed and noisy version back home.

And just to be clear, we did have a very nice lunch and it was all quite 'normal' but while we were away we'd been struck by how much more relaxed restaurant dining was, how the staff expected us to take our time before ordering and between courses being served. We've been very much trained to get in, have your grub and get out again, relieved to have the whole thing over and done with.

On the other hand it was a relief not to have to think about how to express what we wanted in a foreign language. I was never sure that I was doing it right and if you go somewhere new every day, the staff don't have a chance to get used to my weird pronunciation habits. Or else, they assume that because I've just ordered quite proficiently, I must be able to do all the small talk associated with a meal. Nope! In fact, I'd never really noticed (why would you?) how much small talk there is around going to a restaurant and having a meal and how much easier that is to do when you're a native speaker.

Sort:

It can vary quite a lot within the UK, but the French have their own ways. A phrase book or school French will only get you so far with the language. We're off to French speaking Canada, but not sure how much we'll need our French.

Wow! thanks for sharing this is content with us, I guess you must have a great lunch with your mother-in-law it is really nice to have a meal with our family members so can stick together as one.
