All of us board vehicles almost on a daily basis. Many of us also undertake journeys. Many of us also aspire to have vehicles of our own in future. We therefore need to be familiar with some simple vocabularies associated with motor vehicles and road transport.
Let us read the account of how a young boy undertook a journey in his father’s car.
I was excited when my father informed me that we would be undertaking along journey that would last a whole day.
As soon as we woke up, I had to wash the body of the car first. Then my father decided to check the systems of the car to ensure that they were functioning well since we were going on a long journey.
He first opened the bonnet. Then he checked the engine oil in the engine and opened the lid of the radiator to ensure that sufficient water was there for the cooling system. He didn’t want to tamper with the carburetor and ignition kit serviced by the mechanic the day before the journey. He noticed that the fan belt was still in good working condition.
He then got inside the car and checked the foot brake and the hand brake. He switched on the headlamp the rear lights and the parking lights to make sure they were functioning well. He also cleaned the interior rear mirror. So we were set for the journey. My father went behind the steering wheel. He switched on the engine and revved it. Having fastened his seatbelt, he asked me to fasten my own too. So the journey began. We took the expressway (which of course is a dual carriage way). Even though Daddy did not speed, a careless driver who was coming behind him, speeding, just hit the bumper of his car. Fortunately, the impact was not much, so Daddy drove on. In an attempt to avoid a pothole, Daddy had to swerve off the road, he got on to the road again and not long after, we nearly had a head-on collision with an oncoming vehicle whose driver was speeding. We eventually got to our destination in the evening.
