Myself and @danpaulson recently went on a day trip to 'steel city': Sheffield, in South Yorkshire. We frequently travel for hours or days on trips, so it was really nice to have a day to discover this city which is virtually on our doorstep - just 40 mins away by car.
Once famed for it's steelworks, Sheffield has re-invented itself as a modern, vibrant city, which houses museums, art galleries, public sculpture, a lively music scene and a large student population. This photo shows Dan at the entrance to the Peace Garden:
The fountains in the Peace Garden bubble up from the floor, inviting children to play between them in the summer, but it was far too cold for us to do anything but admire them from a distance!
Innovation was the name of the game when it came to designing the building that houses Sheffield's Winter Garden, which is an enormous glass house containing many exotic non-native plants:
The old and the new sit side by side in this city, and even the modern planters and seating have a strong design element, situated in front of the old library and gallery building:
