Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha), or Wat Phra Chetuphon, is located behind the Temple of the Emerald Buddha and a must-do for any first-time visitor in Bangkok. The temple that is officially named Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimonmangkhalaram is one of the six temples in Thailand that are of the highest grade of the first class Royal temples.

Wat Pho serves as home to the massive 46-meter long reclining Buddha image, the size of which must be experienced in person as it is simply breathtaking.

he amazing feeling of taking in the sight of the enormous golden figure of the ‘enlightened one’ cannot be explained with words, and even more rarely captured in photos due to its massive size. You have to visit this amazing site to see it for yourself.

It’s an easy ten minute walk between here and the Grand Palace, and we recommend coming to Wat Pho second, because even though the golden Buddha here is just as popular many people don’t take the time to wander around the rest of the complex so the experience tends to be far more relaxing.

The Wat Pho is the oldest and largest temple complex in Bangkok, it houses more than 1,000 Buddha images which is more than any other Wat in Thailand. Most of the images were brought over from abandoned temples in places as Ayutthaya and Sukhothai by order of King Rama I.

The highlight for most people visiting Wat Pho is, of course, the Reclining Buddha. The statue is 15 meters tall and 46 meters long, so large that it feels like it has been squeezed into the building where it is housed.

The feet of the Reclining Buddha statue are 5 meters long and decorated in laksana(Buddhist Sanskrit symbols & characters) of the Buddha.

Wat Pho also has good English speaking guides who will provide interesting information for around 200 - 400 baht, depending on how many people there are in your group and how good your negotiating skills are. After the foundation of Bangkok in the Ko Rattanakosin area in 1782 and the construction of the Grand Palace, King Rama I ordered the construction of the Wat Pho.

During the reign of King Rama III the temple complex was renovated and enlarged which took over 16 years to complete.

You will need to take your shoes off to enter most of the buildings in the temple complex, and when you enter the building where the Reclining Buddha is housed you will be offered a bowl of coins to purchase.

It is considered good luck if you purchase the bowl of coins and then drop them in the 108 bronze bowls which line the length of the hall.

Wat Pho was the first public university in Thailand, specialising in religion, science and literature. It is now more well-known as a centre for traditional massage and medicine. After a walk around the temple there is nothing quite like a relaxing foot or head and shoulder massage. If you've never tried a traditional Thai massage, Wat Pho is a good place to experience this popular leisure activity. It's quite different to most other forms of therapeutic massage and tends to be invigorating rather than relaxing, incorporating yoga style postures to relieve stress and improve blood circulation.
In a small garden next to the housing of the Reclining Buddha you will find a Bodhi tree that is a descendant of the Bodhi tree from Bodhgaya in India under which the Buddha reached enlightenment. The 20 acres temple complex consists of two walled parts separated by a road.
Other attractions at Wat Pho complex include:
• Four chapels – displaying 394 gilded Buddha images.
• Murals – Intricately detailed murals that cover the walkways around Wat Pho.
• Courtyard – Chinese statues that were once used on ships and 91 Chedis (or Stupas) decorated in ceramic pottery flowers and colorful tiles.
