The Aragonese castle
is located on the northern tip of the Gulf of Naples on a high scenic volcanic rock in the eastern part of the Italian Ischia.The original fort was erected here in 474 BC. By the tyrant Geli - Hieron I. Over the centuries, the castle has passed many times from hand to hand. The Romans, the Visas, the Vandals, the Arabs, the Normans and the Anjougans were ruled by it.
In 1441, the king of Aragon, the later king of Naples Alfons V. Aragon, fortified the castle and commissioned the construction of more than 200 meters of stone causeway connecting the walls of the castle to the rest of the island. At that time, the fortress served as a shelter for the local population against continuous attacks by pirates.
At present, the Aragonese Castle is an important cultural and tourist center of the island, where exhibitions and concerts take place. From the viewing terrace on its tower you can admire the beautiful panorama of the nearby Ischia Ponte.
