That’s when Montecatini Terme caught our attention. We had passed through this small Tuscan town a few times during our drives, and its name kept popping up as a nearby spot worth exploring. With energy levels dipping and a desire to stay closer to our accommodations, we decided this would be our Sunday adventure.
Montecatini Terme has a quiet elegance to it, with old-world architecture and a laid-back vibe that immediately let us breathe a little easier. Our first stop was the funicular ride up the hill to the village of Montecatini Alto. The ride itself was scenic and smooth, slowly carrying us up the mountain while offering spectacular views of the Tuscan countryside. As soon as we reached the top, we were sold—we knew we had to find a place to eat that would let us enjoy that view a little longer.
It was Sunday, which in Italy can be both charming and frustrating. Charming in that towns feel slow and peaceful, almost frozen in time; frustrating in that many restaurants are closed or operate on their own rhythm. Luckily, we found a spot that was open, and we turned the moment into a casual brunch overlooking the hills. Simple food, great views, and a slower pace—it was exactly what we needed.
After brunch, we strolled around the hilltop village, which offered beautiful picture opportunities and quiet little corners to explore. It was a short walk, but a memorable one.
Next on our plan was Montecatini’s other claim to fame: the Thermal Baths. This town has long been known as a wellness destination, and we were curious to see what the fuss was about. Unfortunately, we arrived right at the start of their lunch break—and if you’ve traveled in Italy, you know that when places shut down for lunch, they really shut down. Everything else in town seemed to be closed too, except for a lone gelateria, which became our impromptu dessert break.
After waiting about an hour, we finally got into the thermal complex. Visually, the architecture was stunning—grand colonnades, detailed stonework, and a feeling of old-world luxury. But that’s where the excitement ended. The baths themselves weren’t actually in use for soaking or wellness treatments. No interactivity, no real experience to engage in—just a walk-through. The entry fee felt steep for what turned out to be more of an architectural site than a spa experience.
Still, given its proximity to where we were staying, Montecatini Terme wasn’t a bad choice for a quiet Sunday. The funicular and hilltop village were absolutely worth it. The thermal baths? Not so much. But every trip has its highs and lows, and this one gave us a mix of both—all wrapped in the beauty of a town that still holds on to its historical charm.
Sometimes, the best travel memories come from almost doing nothing.

The great view and the historical image of the town was the best choice to go explore. A place like no other.
