Our bags were packed and early in the morning my girlfriend and I left our apartment in Vienna. We were already running late and didn’t even have time for a proper breakfast and still very sleepy, we hoped not to have forgotten anything for our trip. It was shortly after 5 o'clock in the morning and the subway which was taking us to the bus station was almost empty. When the subway finally arrived, we ran as fast as we could (and as fast as our luggage allowed) to the bus terminal.
Luckily our bus to Prague was a little late and we made it just in time. The bus was sparsely occupied and half lying, half sitting we made ourselves comfortable on two seats and used the bus ride to catch up a little sleep.
It was the first time in Europe for my girlfriend and since I also had travelled far too few countries in Europe, we wanted to use the time she was here in the best possible way and had planned a week-long city break in the north of Europe. From Vienna to Prague, then by bus to Berlin and finally by plane to Copenhagen.
Since we had slept almost the whole bus ride, the time had passed quickly and at noon we arrived on one of Prague’s bus stations. Since we were on a tight budget, we saved the money for a taxi and made our way to our AirBnB accommodation by foot. It was located a bit out of the centre and at least at first, the walk there seemed not too far.
However, as we had to cross the Vltava River and the next bridge was quite far, we quickly regretted the decision to walk there, carrying all our luggage.
Despite the location, our accommodation was big, well equipped and we immediately felt comfortable. Since we had planned only two days in Prague, we did not want to lose any time and after we had lunch, we set out to explore the city.

Unsere Koffer waren gepackt und zeitig in der Früh verließen meine Freundin und ich unsere Wohnung. Noch immer ganz verschlafen und mit lediglich einem Kaffee im Magen, hofften wir nichts vergessen zu haben und alles Notwendige für unsere mehrtägige Reise eingepackt zu haben. Es war kurz nach 5 Uhr in der Früh und die U-Bahn, die uns zum Busbahnhof bringen sollte, noch fast menschenleer. Wir waren bereits spät dran und als die U-Bahn endlich in Erdberg einfuhr, rannten wir so schnell wir konnten, und so schnell es unser Gepäck erlaubte zum Busterminal.
Unser Bus nach Prag hatte zum Glück ein wenig Verspätung gehabt und ein wenig außer Atem schafften wir es gerade noch rechtzeitig. Der Bus war nur spärlich besetzt und halb liegend, halb sitzend machten wir es uns auf jeweils zwei Sitzen gemütlich und nützten die Busfahrt um ein wenig Schlaf nachzuholen.
Da meine Freundin war zum ersten Mal in Europa war und auch ich erst viel zu wenige Länder in Europa bereist hatte, wollten wir die Zeit in der sie hier war bestmöglich nützen und hatten eine einwöchige Städtereise in den Norden Europas eingeplant. Von Wien aus ging es erstmals nach Prag, danach mit dem Bus weiter nach Berlin und schlussendlich mit dem Flugzeug bis nach Kopenhagen.
Da wir fast die ganze Busfahrt geschlafen hatten, war die Zeit wie im Flug vergangen und schon zur Mittagszeit fanden wir uns auf einem der Prager Busbahnhöfe wieder. Da wir wie immer mit einem geringen Budget unterwegs waren, sparten wir das Geld für ein Taxi und machten uns zu Fuß auf dem Weg zu unserer AirBnB Unterkunft. Diese lag etwas außerhalb vom Zentrum und der Fußmarsch dorthin schien nicht allzu weit. Da wir jedoch auf die andere Seite der Moldau mussten und die nächste Brücke alles andere als am Weg lag, bereuten wir schnell die Entscheidung uns zu Fuß und mit all unserem Gepäck auf den Weg gemacht zu haben.
Trotz der Lage wusste unsere Unterkunft durch den freundlichen Vermieter und die Ausstattung mehr als zu überzeugen und wir fühlten uns sofort wohl. Da wir lediglich zwei nächste in Prag eingeplant hatten wollten wir keine Zeit verlieren und nachdem wir zu Mittaggegessen hatten, machten wir uns auf den Weg die Stadt zu erkunden.
Although it was April, we were anything but lucky with the weather and it was icy cold and the sky was overcast with clouds. Thick packed we made our way to the old town and already the walk along the bank of the Vltava River was beautiful. Since it was already late afternoon, we did not have much time left and decided to explore the Jewish quarter Josefov, to stroll through the narrow streets and to marvel at the famous 600-year-old Prague Town Hall clock before it got dark.
Obwohl es schon April war, hatten wir alles andere als Glück mit dem Wetter und es war eisig kalt und der Himmel war von Wolken verhangen. Dick eingepackt machten wir uns auf den Weg in die Altstadt und schon der Fußmarsch entlang des Ufers der Moldau war wunderschön und wusste uns sofort zu überzeugen. Da es schon später Nachmittag war, blieb uns nicht mehr viel Zeit und wir entschieden uns dazu das jüdische Viertel Josefov zu erkunden, durch die engen Gassen zu schlendern und noch bevor es dunkel wurde am Altstädter Ring die berühmte 600 Jahre alte Prager Rathhausuhr zu bestaunen. Umso später es wurde, desto kälter wurde es und als wir spät abends wieder in unsere Unterkunft zurückkehrten, waren wir froh endlich wieder im Warmen zu sein.
The next day in the morning we got up early again and after a filling breakfast in one of the small coffee houses, we made our way back to the old town. Since we still felt the long walks of the previous day in our legs, we better took one of the trams to the centre and saved us a lot of time and effort. With the smartphone and Google Maps as a constant companion, we made our way through the old town, pasted the Rudolfinum, strolled along the Vltava river and crossed it a little later on Charles Bridge. This important 14th century bridge is one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe and a landmark of the city. After shooting countless photos of the two bridge towers and the countless statues, we crossed the bridge and made our way through narrow streets and countless steps up the path to the Prague Castle. The view from up here was breath-taking and also the enormous size of the St. Vitus Cathedral astonished us.
Am nächsten Tag in der Früh standen wir abermals früh auf und nach einem füllenden Frühstück in einem der kleinen Kaffehäuser, machten wir uns abermals auf den Weg in die Altstadt. Da wir die langen Fußmärsche vom vorherigen Tag immer noch in den Beinen spürten, nahmen wir diesmal besser eine der Straßenbahnen bis ins Zentrum und ersparten uns auf diese Weise einiges an Zeit und Anstrengung. Mit dem Smartphone und Google Maps als ständigen Begleiter, bahnten wir uns abermals den Weg durch die Altstadt und machten uns nun auf den Weg in Richtung Prager Burg und Veitsdom. Vorbei am Rudolfinum schlenderten wir entlang der Moldau und überquerten diese wenig später an der Karlsbrücke. Diese bedeutende Brücke aus dem 14. Jahrhundert ist eine der ältesten Steinbrücken Europas und ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Nachdem wir unzählige Fotos von den beiden Brückentürmen und den unzähligen Statuen geschossen hatten, überquerten wir die Brücke und bahnten uns nun durch enge Gassen und unzählige Stufen den Weg hinauf zur Prager Burg. Die Aussicht von hier oben war atemberaubend und auch die enorme Größe des Veitsdom brachte uns ins Staunen.
It was already late afternoon since we had stopped every five seconds to take photos and since we had already made our way up to the castle, we also wanted to visit the nearby viewpoint Petřín. The way there led over small paths and through forests and offered beautiful views across to the other bank of the Vltava and over the city.
Da wir gefühlt alle fünf Sekunden Halt gemacht hatten um Fotos zu schießen, war es bereits später Nachmittag und da wir nun bereits den weiten Weg bis zur Burg hinaufgewandert waren, wollten wir ebenfalls noch den nahegelegenen Aussichtspunkt Petřín besichtigen. Der Weg dorthin führte über kleine Pfade und durch Wälder und bot immer wieder wunderschöne Aussichten hinüber aufs andere Ufer der Moldau und über die Stadt.
Now it was already dawning and after we had warmed ourselves for a while in the lookout tower and enjoyed the view, we made our way back to our accommodation. On the way we made a short stopover in one of the many souvenir shops. Our little trip had started perfectly with two great days in Prague and now we were already excited for our next stopover in Berlin!
Nun begann es bereits zu Dämmern und nachdem wir uns eine Zeit lang im Aussichtsturm aufgewärmt hatten und die Aussicht genossen, machten wir uns auf den Rückweg in unsere Unterkunft. Auf dem Weg legten wir noch einen kurzen Zwischenstopp in einem der vielen Souvenirshops ein und kamen schließlich spät abends wieder zurück in unsere Unterkunft. Wir hatten zwei tolle Tage in Prag und schon morgen würde es weiter gehen nach Berlin. Unsere kleine Reise hatte perfekt begonnen und Prag hatte uns zu überzeugen gewusst!
