Brazil
During the trip in South America with Imma, my girlfriend, we stopped at Foz do Iguacù in the Brazilian state of Paranà. We decided to visit the well-known Iguazu falls, among the New7Wonders of Nature. It is possible to visit the falls both from the Brazilian side and the Argentinian side. Our plan was to spend the first day in Brazil and the second we would have moved to Argentina in order to complete the tour. We have heard that the Argentinian side would have been amazing but we didn’t know what to expect truly.
We booked a room at the Tetris Hostel, a colorful hostel, exceptionally assembled with unused containers. Almost all the rooms overlooked the courtyard where there were a nice bar and a small swimming pool available for the guests. Unfortunately, we spent nearly all the time out. Our bedroom with the en-suite bathroom was comfortable and luckily there was the AC otherwise we wouldn’t have slept.
As we got the hostel I discovered that Foz do Iguacu borders not just Argentina but also Paraguay.
So I started to think aloud: Why don’t we have breakfast in Brazil, lunch in Paraguay and dinner in Argentina? Imma understood that such a proposal could have been just mine so, even if a little discouraged, she accepted the challenge. The day began with the aim of achieving the purpose and we woke up early. Rich breakfast at the bar of the Hostel, we filled up the bags, we made sure that our cameras were charged and we went to the bus stop.
The bus took 20 minutes to get the park. In few minutes we met Franco from Paraguay and Fiona from Australia. We spent the whole morning together under the falls.
- Coati warning: it is a member of the raccoon family. They don’t waste time to ransack in your bags and steal your snacks. Generally, it is a friendly animal but do not try to frighten it. It may turn into a dangerous animal.
- Take with you another t-shirt or a rain jacket, these will be very useful at the end of the tour. If you love taking pictures and video makes sure that your cameras are well protected from the water.
At the end of our tour, we were completely wet. We came back to the city center and we moved to the border with Paraguay. The closest Paraguayan city to the Brazilian border is Ciudad del Este. The economy of the city is based on the exchange with Brazil. Hundreds of Brazilian and tourists from all over the word pass the border in order to buy clothes and electronic staff. The prices are really cheap and it is very convenient. Even if the city is really crowded and very busy it is not dangerous. It is painful to see kids selling fresh juices and gadgets to tourists knowing that maybe that will be their life forever.
Paraguay
We planned a fast visit so we eat in a kind of local “fast food”. At the entrance of the restaurant, there was a giant grill with several kinds of meats. Inside there was a table with a rich buffet full of typical Paraguayan food. The place was called Buenisimo (very good) and it met our expectations created by the name. Luckily it wasn’t a tourist place, it was popular among the Paraguayan. In Ciudad del Este you can pay with Brazilian reais, Argentinian pesos and with American dollars. Last ones are more than welcome, Paraguayans consider dollar safer than guaranì.
Lunch finished, we walked back and passed the bridge on foot as we did for the outward voyage. Since they didn’t check our passport at the border and I was looking forward to getting the Paraguayan stamp on my document, I entered the offices asking for it. The female officer smiled and started to laugh once she understood my motivations for that particular request. By each side of the bridge, there are hundreds of motorcyclists who wear a yellow bib. They work as a taxi driver and take passengers on their motorcycles to another side of the bridge.
We come back to the Hostel for a nap but before we try to figure how to go to Argentina. From the reception, they revealed us that it wasn’t so easy and that it was harder than what we expected. We needed to handle few stops for passport checks at the borders and that discouraged us a little. We decided to think about it for an hour but we made the big mistake to lay down in the courtyard and take advantage of the caipirinha promotion made by the hostel. The wet heat and the tiredness mad the rest. Luckily we still had the opportunity to postpone our purpose with another challenge, namely visiting 3 countries in 24 hours.
Suddenly, Franco from Paraguay reappeared, he was sleeping in the same hostel. He proposed to go to the “Tres Fronteras”, a panoramic viewpoint from which we would be able to see the intersections of two rivers: Iguazù and Paranà. We would have seen Argentina and Paraguay just one in front the other.
Finally, we spent the evening with the hostel crew, we had dinner in a really nice restaurant few minutes far from the Hostel. When we came back we collapsed in the bed, worn-out because of the long day.
Argentina
The next morning we woke up with the same will. We had the same good breakfast then we asked the receptionist how to get the Argentinian side of the falls. He told us that the Hostel made up an agreement with a taxi company which was really convenient. So we waited for our driver, he was a friendly healing from Poland old man, he drove us to the entrance of the park and he waited for us during our border controls.
Once in the park and already shocked by the beauty of the Brazilian side falls we couldn’t expect that nature would have astonished us one more time.

Durante il mio viaggio in Sudamerica con Imma la mia ragazza, eravamo a Foz do Iguacù, nello stato di Paranà. Avevamo deciso di visitare le famose cascate di Iguazù, una delle 7 meraviglie naturali del mondo. È possibile visitarle sia dal lato brasiliano, sia dal lato argentino. Il programma era di visitare il primo giorno il lato brasiliano e il giorno seguente saremmo andati in Argentina per completare il tour. Avevamo sentito dire che il lato argentino fosse incredibile, ma non avevamo idea fino a che punto.
Abbiamo alloggiato al Tetris Hostel, un ostello molto colorato, creato con dei vecchi container in disuso e assemblato in maniera straordinaria. Le camere affacciavano quasi tutte sul cortile interno dove c’era un bel bar e una piscina per gli ospiti. Purtroppo l’abbiamo vissuto poco perché siamo stati quasi tutto il tempo in giro. La nostra camera era spaziosa, aveva il bagno in camera e per fortuna c’era l’aria condizionata. Altrimenti credo che non avremmo chiuso occhio.
Appena arrivati ho scoperto che al di la del fiume Iguacu non c’era solo l’Argentina, bensì anche il Paraguay. Ho pensato subito ad alta voce: “perché non facciamo colazione in Brasile, pranzo in Paraguay e cena in Argentina?” Imma chiaramente ha intuito subito che una proposta del genere non poteva che partire da me. Dopo qualche resistenza ha capito che non si sarebbe potuta opporre e ha ceduto. La giornata è partita con la voglia di completare la missione e ci siamo svegliati presto. Colazione ricca al bar dell’ostello inclusa nel prezzo, abbiamo caricato gli zaini, ci siamo assicurati che le macchine fotografiche fossero cariche e siamo andati alla fermata dell’autobus.
L’autobus ha impiegato circa 20 minuti per arrivare all’ingresso del parco. In pochi minuti abbiamo conosciuto Franco (Paraguay) e Fiona (Australia) e insieme ci siamo inoltrati verso le cascate.
Consigli per i viaggiatori:
fate attenzione ai coati (con una t), una specie di mammiferi simile ai procioni, i quali non perdono occasione per rovistare nelle vostre borse e rubarvi la merenda. In genere non mordono però se si sentono in pericolo potrebbero attaccarvi
portatevi una maglietta di ricambio oppure un impermeabile, nel caso non avete nessuna delle due e fa caldo, visitate le cascate senza maglietta perché vi bagnerete completamente. Se amate fare foto e video immaginate anche una copertura per il vostro cellulare o macchina fotografica.
Dopo aver visitato le cascate, ed esserci bagnati completamente sotto le cascate, torniamo di fretta in centro ad Iguacù e ci dirigiamo verso il confine con il Paraguay. La città al di la del ponte è Ciudad del Este, è un porto franco dove non effettuano controlli alla frontiera. È un grande mercato a cielo aperto e nonostante sia pienissima di gente e ci sia molta confusione non è una città pericolosa. Purtroppo è una città molto povera e dove tutti i brasiliani e gli argentini si recano per riempirsi l’armadio. Le scarpe da ginnastica e i prodotti di elettronica costano la metà che in Brasile e in Argentina. La cosa che fa più male è vedere bambini piccoli vendere spremute di arancia e piccoli oggetti ai viaggiatori.
Noi avevamo tempo solo per il pranzo e abbiamo mangiato in una “tavola calda” che ci avevano consigliato di nome Buenisimo. All’ingresso c’era questa mega griglia con tantissimi tipi di carne che potevamo scegliere. Poi c’era un tavolo grande con un buffet dove era possibile servirsi con tutti i piatti tipici paraguaiani. Per fortuna non era un posto turistico, ma un luogo dove facevano pausa pranzo tutti i paraguaiani che avevano qualche negozio nelle vicinanze. La nota positiva di Ciudad del Este è che è possibile pagare sia con moneta brasiliana sia con moneta argentina, nonché con il dollaro americano. Anzi quasi è preferibile pagare con questa moneta, considerata più sicura della loro.
Finito il pranzo ci siamo incamminati per tornare indietro e abbiamo ripercorso il ponte a piedi come avevamo fatto all’andata. Poiché non controllavano alla frontiera e io ci tenevo ad avere il timbro sul passaporto sono entrato negli uffici della dogana dove ho strappato un timbro e un sorriso della dipendente divertita dalla mia richiesta. Da entrambe le parti del ponte ci sono schiere di motociclisti con la pettorina da tassista che accompagnano in pochi minuti i turisti da una parte all’altra del fiume.
Torniamo in ostello per un breve riposo e ci informiamo su come arrivare in Argentina. Ci hanno rivelato che il passaggio in Argentina era più complesso del previsto, erano necessari una serie di stop sia all’andata che al ritorno e un po’ ci scoraggiamo. Ci prendiamo un’ora per riflettere se completare la missione e commettiamo il grande errore di uscire nel cortile e sfruttare la promozione delle caipirine super scontate. Il caldo umido e la stanchezza hanno fatto il resto. Per fortuna avevamo ancora la possibilità di postporre la missione dandocene una diversa, ovvero visitare 3 paesi in 24 ore e così avremmo fatto.
All’improvviso ricompare Franco dal Paraguay, il quale alloggiava nel nostro stesso ostello e ci propone di andare al belvedere dal quale era possibile vedere il punto di intersezione tra due fiumi, (Iguazù e Paranà) triangolo in cui si osservavano in silenzio i tre stati (Brasile, Argentina e Paraguay).
La serata alla fine l’abbiamo trascorsa in compagnia con gli altri ragazzi dell’ostello e abbiamo cenato in un ristorantino molto carino distante pochi minuti a piedi. Siamo tornati in ostello e siamo crollati, non ce ne siamo neanche accorti che fuori ci fosse musica e si stesse bevendo in compagnia. L’obbiettivo era svegliarsi presto e raggiungere l’Argentina per completare la missione.
Ancora una volta ci siamo svegliati carichi, abbiamo fatto la solita buona colazione e abbiamo chiesto alla reception come arrivare dall’altro lato. Abbiamo scoperto che avevano una convenzione con una compagnia di tassisti e così abbiamo fatto. Un tassista anziano di origini polacche molto cordiale ci ha accompagnato fino all’entrata del parco, aspettandoci mentre completavamo tutta la trafila burocratica alla dogana.
Giunti al parco e già sconvolti dalla bellezza delle cascate del lato brasiliano non potevamo immaginare che sarebbe stato ancora molto ma molto più bello il lato argentino. Spero che le foto possano rendere l’idea. Vi lascio scorrere le mie foto, non c’è più bisogno di parole.
