Second day of Road Trip: Upington to Augrabies Waterfall.

The second day of our Road trip took us from Upington to the Augrabies Waterfall. We started off by crossing the Orange river, which is the largest river in South Africa, although it looks small, it is split up in a few branches, you will see in a later post where the river flows in full force.

As we went along this bright tower became visible in the distance, a bright beacon of light in this dry area.

This tower is actually the Scatec Solar plant, producing 86 MWp of electricity, you can read more about this by clicking on the link.

The roads in this area are long with nothing for miles and miles, just this dry landscape.

This dry world is the home of the *Sociable Weaver birds. These birds build some of the largest structures built by birds in the world. These nests can house up to a 100 birds and consists of various chambers inside. These nests provide shelter and shade against the heat of the environment.

In the town of Kakemas we stopped at the Pienk Padstal (Pink Farmstall) on which I will write a bit more, for #MarketFriday as hosted by @dswigle

After quite a long drive we reached our next stop the Augrabies Waterfall, which means Place of Great Noise in the original local Khoi language. (It is not really such a long drive, but we did drive a bit further, due to taking a wrong turn) I plan to write more on our stay there and post a video of the falls.

I hope you enjoyed the post and that you have a wonderful day.

Sort:

I drove past Scatec Solar back in March on a job trip in Upington, Scatec Solar is quite iconic can be seen from over 70km away, I had my eyes on it and wondering what it is and fortunately we drove passed.

Yes, you see it long before you get to Upington!!

The view at Augrabies Waterfall is so beautiful😃

Wow!! That is some birdhouse! Can you imagine how long it took to build that? I cannot for the life of me. Sirius saves the day, yes?

That waterfall is amazing! No lie! The power generated by that is beyond belief! This has been such a lovely trip! Thank you for sharing it!

MarketFriday began as a way to reach out across the globe and learn about different cultures through by their markets, especially local markets and farmers markets and eventually branching out and evolving over time from straight shopping to a cultural affair as it highlights how we differ and then again, how much we are alike. We have become a melting pot of culture, but, it is still the Rituals, Festivals, food, architecture, even your language/languages that separate us... Along with the fact of what is these things are normal for us. There are unwritten rules that rule our social behaviors. I see this as allowing for increased tolerance between cultures and nations, and opportunities to come together on an even playing ground. A strong culture can be beneficial to a country as it promotes unity, especially during a crisis, peaceful debate, and open dialogue. I have learned so much about all of you and it has been an amazing experience. I can only hope that learning about each other can help us work together for a peaceful world.
