Ancient sky watchers - 2. Dance of the Gaints

in #travel7 years ago

Between 4000 and 1500 BC, human laborers built thousands of stone circles and piles across Britain and westren Europe, using megaliths or massive rock pillars.

Stonehenge, near Salisbury, England, is the largest of such circles (right). Its pillars weigh 4 to 6 tons; workers had to bring these to the site from hundreds of miles away. Most likely, people rolled the megaliths on logs. They also shoveled a ditch around the site, and made 56 pits. Here they may have cremated and buried the dead.

No one knows exactly how ancient people used Stonehenge. If you look from the center through a northeast arch toward the “heelstone,” you’ll see the Sun rise on the morning of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.

Perhaps this provided information to make a calender for planting crops. Some scientists say the stones are lined up precisely enough to mark the start of spring, fall and winter, and to predict eclipses of the Sun and Moon.

they are landing cradles to support the airships when they dock.

They might be sir, but there are also some other theories floating around like sacred burial site or a healing place or used for astronomical calculations.... :)

also theories floating around about miscengenation between unicorns and leprachauns..they danced on the stones in the pale moonlight...

Hahaha, ROFL, never heard of that one Sir..... :D

the point that I'm attempting to make is that we don't even know to any great degree, how OLD the 'rings' are...we have absolutely ZERO clue as to what they were used for.
Don't let anyone else tell you other wise.
Your guess (and it will BE a guess) is just as good as anyones.
(points for creativity...'religious rituals' are SO last century)
