Charming Chioggia - small Venice with many bridges and water channels (part II.)

Second part of article about town of Chioggia near Venice will bring you to the most beautiful churches in the town and gives you the opportunity to see some pictures from medieval event held in mid June every year.

The most beautiful churches in Chioggia

Start your trip in the main promenade Corso del Popolo. Here you can find the most interesting buildings. Take this road in direction to the sea and around water channel Canale Vena back.

First what you can see is Cathedral St. Giacomo from the year 1740.In this church, there is interesting Madonna della Navicella - this is representation of Virgin Mary, who revealed in the beach of Sottomarina in 1508. The most important is the big ceiling fresco (223 m long) from local painter Antonio Marinetti, called as Chiozzotto. To this church you can get until 12 or after the siesta between 4 pm and 6 pm. Be careful, not only shops but even churches are closed during the siesta.

Following interesting church is Chiesa della Trinita on Piazza XX Settembre. This church is from year 1705 and his author is architect Andrea Tiralo, who made marble on the well known square of St.Marc in Venice. This church is from architecture point of view very interesting but we were not inside - it was opened only during afternoon

Opposite of this church, you can find church Chiesa dei Filippini from the year 1722. This church looks quite simple but inside there are many unique paintings from important italian painters (Paolo Pellesina or Antonio Vianelli).

Our trip follows to the church St.Andrew. This church was from 15.century, but in the year 1743 was rebuilt in baroque styl. Hovewer, inside everything is very old and there are really treasures - momumental painting Crucifixion from Giovanni Buonconsiglio, called Il Marescalco. Just few steps from the church, there is clock tower from 11.century, the oldest building of this type in the world.

Using this promenade, we will get to the sea, where we can find famous stone bridge Ponte di Vigo and port. Relax by the sea is amazing. during the way back along the channel, we will find water animals museum and we can stop on the Island San Domenico, where is monastery Santuario di San Domenico.

We finish our trip in the biggest of churches here in Chioggia - there is Cathedral Santa Maria Assunta, built in the year 1624 on the remains of old church destroyed by fire. This cathedral is monumental and really worths visiting. But also closes at 12 am. We have just come few second before closing.

During june Chioggia alives with medieval event - do not miss it

The name of this event is Palio della Marciliana. This medieval event remains history between 1378 and 1381 - fights between Genoa and Venice. But you can see not only fights and knights from this time,but also normal life and normal people living in Chioggia in that times. Also you can see historical craftsmen, musicians or historical taverna. In the evening there is procession through the town and battle.

Chioggia is nice historical town near Venice and it is really worth visiting. Town is similar to Venice because of its water channels but without crowds of people. So if you are in this locality, do not miss it.
