Tragedy and Chance in Demolished Yeongkook-sa Temple Place of Seoul, Korea

in #travel6 years ago

In this posting, I’d like to introduce you the various kinds of the plates and the table wares used in Yeongkook-sa temple. All those relics were found unharmed under the ground.
It was said that those relics were buried under the ground wrapped with the thick clothes.

Thanks to the protection with the thick clothes, almost of the relics could maintain perfect appearance enduring such a long time under the ground.

The relics were well arranged and displayed as below

There were lots of table wares for dinning and tea.
Especially I could see many tea wares among the wares.

Some wares seemed to have been used in the ceremony.

In the corner, there was a buddhist bell. The bell was very impressive, because it was carved so delicately. It was a half feet size of the bell. But it has all components for the buddhist bell.
It must've been used indoors.

I thought some monks buried those relics in hurry. It seemed that something was happen in that temple.
The monks who had buried those relics might have been dead. If the monks were not dead, the relics could not have slept for such a long time under the ground.

I was worried about the fate of that monk, while looking around the relics.
Did he survived during those political disorder ?
Maybe not.

So we could excavate and look those relics now.
It must've been tragedy for the monk, but it was a chance for us to preserve the relics of Goryeo dynasty.

@slowwalker,
Monks played and playing one of the major role in Politics! Coz kings and empires are listening to them! Moreover, without religion support they can't win civilians! I think like you said, that monk was died at that time! Hope he found Nirvana and he gave the world a chance to see crafting technology of Korea at that time period!
The world had / has horrible times and a lot of monks died due to political disorders in your country and in my country too!
Great photography and not only photography, I like the story behind it!

Cheers~

Dishes and pottery always enrich the museums and are always much studied by archaeologists. They give a lot of information not only on the taste of the age but also on rituals or food. In short, a real treasure ...

Yes, the dished and potteries were real treasures. Those were deeply relevant to the life at that times.

very unique images and awesome too. Most of the time i love travel posts and korea is my dream to visit.

Thank you
It must be nice trip in Korea

I wonder how old are those relics, they were well preserved under the ground, thanks to monk who buried them and to the excavators who found them and thank you also @slowwalker for the chance to glance them in photos...

Thank you so much

Really fascinating what Korean history has to offer. Have you ever done a travel post to the DMZ, or near the border?

That is a lot of relics! So wonderful to be able to get a glimpse of the history from so many years ago.

Make me wonder what they will one day find out from our generation maybe a few hundred years from now!

Really hope the monks were okay that burried it!

The carving is beautiful, there is a great richness of history. Everything is very interesting, thank you for sharing it.

@slowwalker, After long introduction of 88 Seoul Olympic Park place now you change my mind. Yeongkook-sa temple has lot of relics. It's unbelievable probably coz I never seen lot of relics in one place of Sri Lankan s temple like these. Every relics showing how Buddha's religion powerful situation. Oh...wow...so impressive decorated styles indeed Buddhist bell. I think it's more valuable than others. I learn more contexts from you now. Thanks and outstanding photo clicks again. Triple gem bless you.

Wow I have a kettle that looks almost the same as the one here. I almost thought it was mine. These relics are now national treasures I suppose. And for the monks to have buried the relics means they are of great value. This is indeed a great discovery

Thank you so much

All forms of relics are very ancient, unique and very good.

You always do such a nice job photographing and explaining what is happening in each picture. Thanks for that!

Why did you get the impression that the monks were in a hurry to bury the artifacts?

Because all the relics were carefully preserved under the ground. Those relics seemed to be hidden to escape from the destruction or the extortion

Got it. Thanks for the explanation. I see now that you included that in your original post. Do you know if the monks had funeral practices which would have involved burying objects?

Amazing exhibits.

That impressive how well preserved that you see the relics despite having been buried, we are talking about how long old? Have to be many years, the good thing is that they are in a better place where they will be cared for as it should be

Excellent article. I really liked it. Good luck to you and Love.

I wonder what happened to the monk? It's a bit of a mystery for sure. Maybe an excavation would reveal more of these beautiful objects.
I liked this bottle. Exquisite shape.
