Walking Québec to see the sights

in #travel9 months ago

Our second day in Québec City had much better weather than the first. It has been pretty warm and sunny all day. We had a walking tour booked and so wandered over to the state parliament where it would start.

Parliament

We had plenty of time so found somewhere to grab a drink and snack for breakfast. We also went up to the citadel fortress to look over the Saint Lawrence River. The river is vast and used by large ships. You can walk along the citadel walls, but need to beware of big drops.

View

This was looking back at the city from the viewing area. A battle between British and French forces was fought there as the British tried to take over the colonies. We learnt on the tour that they let people keep their French culture to keep them on side against the rebellious Americans.

Ladies of Canadian politics

There are lots of statues around there. A large group had gathered for the tour with people from around the world. Our guide was Samuel Dubois who offers this service for free. He is a local and was very entertaining.

Tour

That is him in the hat. We walked quite a way over two hours. We went all the way down to the port.

Old town

The view up to the Hotel Frontenac must have been photographed many times. You can almost see the furnicular that we did not use, but would avoid walking back up the hill. Much of the old town had been rebuilt as it has been affected by fires and hundreds of years of wear. It has appeared in a few films standing in for French locations.

Art

There is an art trail around that area. We saw these foil lines on some buildings and I guessed that they would align from a certain point.

Tiny shop

There were also some tiny shop fronts to be found that were also part of the trail.

I said that the tour is free, but Sam seems to do well from tips. He suggested places to eat and drink. We went to a place where you can sit with your feet a pool. That was nice after all the walking. We actually saw the guide in there getting some lunch before his afternoon tour.

Wet feet

We did some more exploring after getting some lunch. There are so many places to eat around town. You just may just want to avoid the busiest tourist areas. There were a lot of people around. I am so glad the weather improved as it would have been less fun in the rain.

We are resting at the hotel before getting some dinner. We may sample the local delicacy of poutine, cheesy chips/fries with gravy.

Feet in a pool! 🤣 Whatever next?
Looks like a great place and an interesting tour!
I've been to the other side, Vancouver, but this needs exploring too!

The city has a nice feel. Very laid back even though there are lots of tourists.

Pronounced doobwaaaa I am sure! This Looks like a really cool town! I might have to try and visit one day. Poutine is the best!

He's a native french speaker, so it would be pronounced that way. His English is good though. We've enjoyed the city.

I love the visual effect made by those foil lines. And ... that's funny but the glass in your hand in the last shot looks absolutely flat! 😄

A few optical illusions. Obviously they don't use glass with all those bare feet. It's a nice city.

Looks like a lot of fun!

It's quite a place. Various live music going on last night. Heard a couple of versions of Hallelujah. We were lucky with the weather as it's looking to rain again today.

yeah but did they have the secret chord?

That may be a Canadian thing. Lots of love music around the town. Currently enjoying a guitarist at our hotel, but we're not in Québec any more. We've moved on and I'll post about that soon.

Have always fancied Quebec and shall head there one day. Interesting guide too, he sounds great and gave you a great insight.

Next year we’re going to Mexico, so starting to venture further afield ourselves.

Pleased to see the weather has been better to you today and I love the idea of being able to soak your feet after a long walk, whilst enjoying refreshments.

Could rain again today, so it worked out well. We had a nice evening with poutine and great ice cream.

Wow it looks like a lovely place to visit. The foil pattern on the buildings is something I wouldn't have noticed. Sitting with your feet in a pool and a beer sounds like heaven after all that walking.

It feels more like Europe than North America. Definitely worth a visit

Now that is definitely something I'm looking forward to. A sit out where I can deep my feet in a pool. I wonder whose brilliant idea it was?

When one goes for a walk like this, if the weather is not good, it is a bit of a worry. It is good that you got good weather the other day and this place is really walkable. We are looking at it this way. That here one gets to meet many new people and learn many things.

What a wonderful history and has a bit of colonialism in it.
The place also looks very beautiful
I like it

Looks like a lovely city - always fancied visiting it !

Wow, I love that restaurant where you get to eat with your feet in a pool, that's a very cozy idea and I hope to tour around the world too when I get the opportunity to.
